JRE.EXE problems

Hello,

Could anybody explain to me what JRE.EXE is, because it is running on my BDC and I have the following problems:

1. When shutting down my BDC (NT 4, SP6a), the "Application not responding" window pops up for JRE.EXE. Ending the process allows the shutdown to complete.

2. I have also noticed that sometimes JRE.EXE uses over 50% of the CPU resources, climing to 100% at times.

3. For info, my LAN/WAN has no internet connection and the BDC runs the following:
- SQL server 7 SP2
- SMS 2 SP2
- Compaq IM XE 2.1C
The PDC runs the following:
- Exchange 5.5, SP2
- ArcserveIT 6.61, SP1
- InoculateIT 4.53 SP1
