(Hmmm.... seems I can't post an image here, so if you'd click on the link, the image of the "splash" popup referred to below will appear.)

What this is is totally beyond me.

I thought I might have a problem with JAVA so I (think I) uninstalled and re-installed it but the popup still comes up every time I start an app... Firefox, IE, printing, up pops this little monster and then, once I click on the OK button, it goes away and the app proceeds to perform as originally intended.

    I R Cornfused.

As far as I know I DO have all permissions (signed in as administrator with no other users on computer) so any hints you may be able to give me would be most appreciated.

Only Contributing Members can post attachments - you found the workaround :)

The message refers to Java as referenced in the window title bar.

    I suggest you run JavaRa

Jqsnotify.exe is a Java Quick Starter process, you don't need it.

To disable jqsnotify.exe from loading automatically, perform the following steps:

    • Got to Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open box, click OK
    • Select the Startup tab and clear the box next to jqsnotify.exe
    • click Apply to save your changes and then OK to close the System Configuration Utility dialog box
    • Restart your computer

Ari: Sorry, no jqsnotify.exe in the startup list.

    ??

Only thing there that references JAVA is jusched.exe for the updater.

PeteC: Ran JavaRa and uninstalled old versions, still getting the pop.

I also took care of the posting images problem.

My bad... it's now running as a service. So in msconfig, select the Services tab and uncheck Java Quick Starter.

Ahhhh... went to RUN> MSCONFIG> SYS CONFIG UTIL> SERVICES and found JAVA QUICK STARTER. Unchecked it, hit APPLY and OK and restarted computer.

No joy. Little monster is still popping up.

(Interesting that under STARTUP, the jusched.exe is now checked again.....)

    OK...

    Next try this:

    1. Select Start, next select Control Panel
    2. In the Control Panel window, double-click on the Java icon (if you have your Control Panel set to Category View, click the Switch to Classic View link at the top left)
    3. From the Jave Control Panel applet that opens, select the Advanced tab and double click Miscellaneous
    4. Clear the check mark before Java Quick Starter, click OK

Oh Dear.... the checkbox was already cleared.

I checked it, restarted, then went back and UN-checked it, restarted and

    Guess What??

    Samizdat.

Still get the little monster popping up.

Soooo.... I went and made myself a "Dark 'N Stormy"
    (1 jigger Bermuda Black Rum)
    (half small glass crushed ice)
(Squirt of lime juice [small squirt])
(fill to brim with Rampage [or equivalent] sweet [NOT the awful Jamaican stuff with the pepper in't!] Ginger Beer)

Mix well and SIP until the computer problem recedes into the darkness.

(Censored) works fer me, it does!

(NOTE: REAL problems may require repeated applications of this analgaesic treatment.... enjoy!)

Next suggestion is awaited with bated (or baited... with octopus?) breath...

Another suggestion I got was to totally uninstall JAVA via the Control Panel, then do a "clean install" from Sun's site. I'm a little leery of this as I NEVER get a "clean" uninstall when trying to eliminate some program that is behaving badly.

    Well, it's a thought.

    Opinions?

    "Eli, Eli, Lamma Sabecthani? "

Well, I went and uninstalled Java via CP, rebooted to ensure changes, then downloaded JRE-6U20-Windows-i586.exe from Sun's site, reinstalled Java with that and....

    Wait for it...

Bleedin' 'Ell... still the same popup appears.

Should we move this to the virus threads? I begin to wonder if this isn't some sort of malware rather than a real Java problem.

I doubt it's a Malware issue, but you could post the required logs in the Malware forum just to be sure.

I'd run JavaRa as suggested by Pete earlier.

    OK, missed that.

If not Malware, last resort will be a clean install.

Sorry guys, got called outta town for a few days!

I re-ran JAVA-RE and selected "remove old installations ", got a log which showed a lot of removals, then d/l the upgrade (JRE 6U20) and did the install.... same problem.

Then went to control panel and uninstalled JavaRE from there, restarted and went to the website, re-downloaded JRE6U20 and installed... same problem. (build 1.6.0_20-b02)

I'm getting a bit punchy here so I suppose I could have done something wrong, but I don't think so.

Any more ideas? Is there a better way to uninstall the Java than using the control panel?

    So:

Ran JavaRA after uninstalling from Control Panel just to see what happens and got:
Indicates to me that all the Java is removed...

    So I re-started again.

Now the browsers start right up with no splash screen, everything <seems> to be running faster than it was <probably pure perception rather than actual speed> and I have a question:

Just what the heck good IS Java? Is it something I REALLY need?

Java is needed for certain Web applications. For example some sites use a java uploader for images, etc. Yahoo Games require Java. OpenOffice uses Java. Some Web ads are java based. Some installed programs require Java. Do you need it? Depends on what programs you use and what you do online.

    To control Java options:
    1. Set java Quick Start to Manual in Services.
    2. Delete the registry value HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current version/Run/ java update
    3. Control Panel > Java (double click) > Update (never check)
    4. Control Panel > Java (double click) > Misc (never check) > uncheck system tray and quick start (last 2 items in list).

Tony: Thanks! About two hours after I posted I discovered that I DO need Java to run things on the computer, so I re-installed using "jxpinstall.exe" from the Java site and....

    (no surprises here...)

    Same little popup again.

I'm just gonna give up and live with the slow browser startup and stupid popup window.

Time to get on with my life.

In Firefox, go to Tools > Addons > disable Java Quick Start there. This will kill the popup when using FF.

Unchecking quick start in Control Panel > Java > Advanced should eliminate the popup for IE.

Much screaming from backstage area, sounds of wood breaking, flats shaking and the light bars starting to sway, language heard as would make a Norweigan Fishwife blush as our hero pokes his head out between the curtains to say:

"Thanks, TonyT! That solved the problem! "
