When ever i run PestPatrol it finds the following pest
ISTbar ( Integrated Search Technologies ) it lists the registry entry as
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\downloadmanager
I delete it but it always seems to return any information on this item would be welcome.

    It is a hijacker.
The reappearance of it means you have something running in the background putting it back.
Posting a HijackThis log would help here.

Many thanks for your reply markp62
The Hijack This log is below any help would be very welcome as the problem seems to just keep coming back no matter how many times i delete it.
I have also run the ISTbar removal tool from Symantec and it reports no trace of ISTbar so it may be a false positive from PestPatrol ( not unknown !!! )
also examining the registry entry highlighted shows only the default value and says " Value not set "

entry highlighted shows only the default value and says " Value not set "
That is normal, pick any other Key, and you will find the same thing. If you were to delete it, you would have wasted your time as it would immediately reappear.
I looked through your log, and nothing bad jumps out at me. Got lots of neat little toys running though.
You may be interested in SpywareBlaster for prevention in the future. Once installed, and updated, and all protection are enabled, it doesn't need to be running. Only when updating and enabling.

I didn't think there was anything in the log that was suspicious but it's nice to have it confirmed, as regards SpywareBlaster i already have it installed.
Do think that any of the programs i am using are a waste of time and only toys ? as i take protection of my pc very seriously.
I have just updated PestPatrol and it no longer finds ISTbar as a pest so it looks like it was a false positive as suspected.
again many thanks for you interest.

Me too !!! I find PTFB very useful especially for dealing with the continual pop ups that ask if i want to "allow an active x programs and plugins to run"
The last free version of the program can be downloaded Here as the latest Pro version is no longer freeware.

    regards
