hi all, newbie + first post.
we have a linksys wrt400n, comcast as provider. lenovo laptop for primary access, running windows 7.
had a storm last night here in norcal with a power interruption (clocks were reset). this morning, wireless router not working.
    the facts:
incoming internet ok, if I connect my computer directly to the cable modem (with a cat5 cable), i have
    internet access.
if i connect the router to the modem instead, and use a cat5 cable from the router to my laptop, i get nada.
with my computer directly connected, i have looked at the router status, and it appears i am not getting an IP address.
i have tried power cycling (both modem and router), resetting the router, no luck.
i also tried cloning (and saving) my laptop's MAC address, with a power cycle of the router added for good measure, also no luck.
is there something else I can try, or is my router fried?
    thanks in advance!

Sounds like the router could be fried, but maybe not if the router powers up OK. Usually, when a linksys or cisco goes bad, it lights up and goes into a "rapid leds flashing on and off ".

When switching between a direct connection to modem and a connection to the router you have to do it in this sequence, else the router won't be able to synchronize with the modem:

assuming router connected to modem, pc to router.
    1. unplug modem.
    2. unplug router.
    3. power on modem and wait until it syncs with ISP.
    4. power on router and wait until sysnc with modem
    5. power on pc

    thanks for the advice.
i did sequence the power cycling (modem, then router) as you described, and it didn't work before.

    however...

i tried it again just now, and the linksys router is back from the dead. must have something to do with the fact that i ran out this afternoon and bought a new router, from a competing manufacturer, and the ol' linksys realized it was in jeopardy. fwiw, the router never exhibited a light pattern like you described; it was showing normal blue lights, etc.

makes me wonder why setting up these things is always so finicky. really unstable for a consumer device. best part of my day was calling linksys help line, and when the service guy figured out the router was past warranty, he started trying to sell me on various service options. puhleeze.

The reason the sequence is important is because the moden associates with the computer or router MAC address and it's recorded in the modem client table. The modem must be shut off for a few seconds, sometimes up to 30 seconds, then with no computer or router connected to it, it is powered on. It still has no MAC address to associate with. Then connect & power on the router.

Sometimes, but rarely, and depending upon the ISP configurations, the modem will be asigned a new WAN IP address when resetting it or powering in off and on. Then, the router, which had previously associated with the modem's old IP address, fails to sync properly.

    Glad all is well.

I suggest 2 important actions to take:

    1. get a battery backup unit for the modem, router & comp. They offer better surge protection than power strips.

    2. Mark this thread as Solved.
