Have used IrfanView for years. For scanning in photo's (Hp R-40 printer/scanner/copier) I've always used Adobe products. I would like to use IrfanView 3.8 but when I choose "Select Source" dialog box is empty and "select" is greyed out. Only option is cancel. When I choose "Acquire" I get a screen error TWAIN error ... Can't connect to device or TWAIN driver not installed. Since my Photoshop Elements 2.0 reconized my Hp for scanning, I snooped around and found 2x files.....
    TWAIN_32.8BA and WIAsupportEL.8LI
I copied / pasted them into IrfanView plugin folder. No suprise it did not work. The strange thing, IrfanView reconizes my Hp by model number when "Print Picture" selection is chosen, providing a boat load of "print picture and print text" options. Any ideas what TWAIN / WIA file(s) it's looking for and where IrfanView wants them installed?
    Thanks

Hi is the printer ,copier ,scanner, wia compliant, maybe not for just the scaner part dono

    Windows Image Acquisition
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;270157
OR-MS KB type in wia for all ms products

You'res I think should be get it updated,at HP or have you ?
Im not sure exactly what model you have,

    Start here
    http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html

My cheap scanner is not wia compliant , this means word , wordpad, notepad, paintbrush( It was not made for windows)cant import to or I should say aquire to.
I have to use photo shop , Hp photo printing ,or imaging and just checked infranview works to.
In infranview> file > select twain source
    have you done this
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
but shows examples of how other
software can get in the way, if it is wia

"Could Not Enable TWAIN Source" or "There Is No Scanner Found" Error Messages Are Displayed
If you cancel an in-progress scan from a third-party program that is obtaining images from a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)-supported device, you may receive the following error messages: Could not enable TWAIN source. -or- There is no scanner found...

And I know the . SYMPTOMS dont fit exactly either, but please read, atleast it will get you started

    Hi Guys

I forgot there was a button on my Hp I can push which status itself as scanner. This assist when a calling program (Irfanview) is not directly configured to the Hp. I seldon use it, since Adobe and my OCR software automatically detected the Hp/scanner/twain/WIA values when they were installed. Thus a push of the magic button, select "Acquire" in Irfanview and my Hp scanning software leaped into action via a Irfanview input. Thanks for your interest and response.
