Ok. What do I need to do to share a folder and a printer on a Win2k machine? We are running a small workgroup. I can see the Win2k machine, but cannot connect to it.
    Any help?
    Thanks,

Errr - would that be IPC$ rather than ips$?

Assuming all your workgroup/network settings are OK, it's probably an authentication issue. Your 2K PC needs some way to know who is trying to connect and what rights they will have when they do.

In a peer style workgroup (no central controller) the way to do this is to have each PC in the workgroup logging on with a username AND password.

Then on the 2K PC, go into the Local Users and Groups section (right-click My Computer, select manage, then Local Users and Groups) and add each account as a local user. Has to be an exact match.

If you want any of the users to have more rights than just those of a simple user (printer management, more PC managment on the 2K PC, whatever) you will need to go into the groups section and add those accounts to which ever group seems to meet your needs. Or if none of the pre-built groups does it for you, build your own. This is a good way to control access.

For instance, if you have folders shared as folder-A and folder-B, you could set up 3 groups. Group-A, Group-B, Group-all. Then in the permissions section for folder-A, allow Group-A and Group-all. For folder-B, allow Group-B and Group-all.

This way, folks in Group-A could only access folder-A, etc.

    Yes, sorry that is IPC$.....oops!
Thank you for the info. I will double check and get back to you with my findings. I tend to think you are correct, except that all other computers can share the files without having to logon or enter a password. I relaxed the permitions on the 2K box and still get the logon screen to \\win2k_computer\IPC$ and asking for password.

Only NT systems (NT/2K/XP) require this sort of validation. 9X/ME could care less.

And an NT system with the Guest account enabled will accept any logon for file sharing as long as it includes a password. But IMO that isn't a particularly good thing to do.

    Newt,
Thank you. That was it. I had the user setup on the 2K machine, but did not have thier password. As soon as I added the password, that user was able to see the shares on the 2k machine.
    Thanks for you time!!
