Hi, I am having a problem accessing the Internet. Basically it works for a while and one day I start the computer and I have no access. When I use the repair option it spends ages trying to get the IP Address eventually I get the message Windows could not renew your IP Address.
The only way I have temporarily solved the problem is to restore my computer to a previous date, this works fine for a time but the problem starts all over again.
I have tried all the basic stuff but I have not been able to solve the problem. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.
    Adrian.

Have you rebooted your modem and or router? I would pull the power cord out on both for a full five minutes.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried turning off the router but that does not solve the problem I am still getting the same message cannot find IP Asdress. I should add my laptop and smart phone are working fine it's just the desktop.

i'll assume you have a regular consumer type router i.e. Dlink, linksys, belkin.

Right off the bat let's do a couple of t-shoots

    A) click on start, click on run and type 'cmd" or "command" (if xp) with out the quotes

at the command line type "ping 127.0.0.1" with out the quotes and hit enter. this checks your tcp/ip stack.. you should see reply reply reply reply

although you have tried this tell me what you see when you type in these commands

ipconfig /release (you should see some zeros)

ipconfig /renew (this tries to acquire an address)

Lastly, in the notification area, right click on your network connections icon, left click on open network connection if using xp or open network and sharing center if using win 7. if xp right click on the local area connection icon, and left click on properties. if win 7 left click on change adapter settings and right click on the correct interface you are using wireless or wired. left click on properties.

left click on internet protocol version 4 left click on properties. this instruction applies to both 7 and xp. give yourself an ip address. Again assuming you are using a consumer router with default settings (ip range from .100-.149) type in 192.168.1.125 (if using an old dlink your third octet might be a zero instead of a 1 (192.168.0.125) IN the subnet mask put in 255.255.255.0 and in the default gateway put in 192.168.1.1 you can stick with the dns settings or change them to googles which i use and they are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

click OK all the way out.. drop to dos again (click start click run type in cmd or command if xp
    hit enter

type ping 192.168.1.125 and hit enter. this checks to see if your NIC is working. Now type 'ping 192.168.1.1" again without quotes to see if you can talk to the router.. If you can you are there now type 'ping google.com" and hit enter

If no joy at this time I might guess at a bad wireless or ethernet cable from your host to your router

Thanks for your detailed reply, its people like you that make this site the best around.
I entered the command ipconfig/renew and I got the message "No operation can be preformed on wireless network connection 5 while it has its media disconnected "
I knew this was not the case so I went to network connections clicked view available wireless networks and was informed another program was controlling network connections.
Long story short I checked "Use windows to configure network settings" ran the repair command and Its working again. Thanks for you help. Adrian.
