Win98SE, IE latest version, Cable Internet Connection, Gateway Pentium, about 4 years old,. This has juts begun happening regularly to my adult son's pc. Not sure what to do to help him solve the problem nor what is causing this. Therefore I am not sure what steps I should take to attempt to solve the problem.

here is the error code he gets when my internet shuts down, which it does repeatedly (He has been on a board call this morning and it has shut down 3 times so far).

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
    module USER.EXE at 001e:0000166c.

I just fixed one of these for somebody a few days ago. In their case it was a damaged active x control that was causing it. Have a look in your windows\downloaded program files folder and see if any of the files there are shown to be damaged. If so, delete it and then try IE. If none of them are shown to be damaged, open the internet options applet in the control panel, click on the advanced tab and uncheck the line that says enable third party browser extensions. Reboot and then try IE. If it works, post back and maybe we can track it down from there.

Sometimes this error can be caused by video drivers. If the previous things didn't get you anywhere, you could try reducing your hardware acceleration. Right click on my computer>properties. Click on the performance tab and then on the graphics button. Slide the slider all the way to the left, reboot and then give IE another try. If it works try reinstalling your video drivers or better yet see if there's an updated one available and install that.

These are just guesses on my part. Things that I've done in the past to fix user.exe errors in IE. As sparrow said, this type of error can be tough to track down. Let us know what you find.

    what I found

I did several things but still one problem remaining. See near the end for problem.

    1. in Downloaded Program files removed damaged file "nCase installer Class "
    2. Set do not allow 3rd party per Zander recommend.
    3. Performed Windows update and reboot.
    4. Updated Norton anti-virus and ran a full scan - no viruses
    5. Ran Disk Cleanup
    6. Looked into nCase and discovered it is spy ware. removed files and exe associated with it. msbb and Fleock .
    7. Ran Lavasoft Ad-aware - removed 164 data miner objects (quarantined them)
    8. Ran Spybot - found no problems
    9. Ran Bazooka (kephyr) that found Clearsearch, huntbar and point manager.
removed point manager, but not the other 2 (registry entries)
    10. Updated Zone Alarm (free version) , set zone alarm to block n-case programs. (also 1 or 2 others but not remember which ones. Allowed all the necessary and usual ones.
    11. Cleared out windows temp and temporary internet files.
    12. Did not do any registry editing with regedit as I ran out of time and not completely sure of what to remove. Have used regedit on my own PC successfully in the past.

Did reboots during all of the processes mentioned. Scan disk ran at least one of the times I rebooted.

Last Problem is that when I use Windows Explorer to access files such as to delete them, the files get deleted but the system hangs for a while before coming back.

Lastly I ran disk defrag and left for home.

PC was later used to surf the web last night for about 1/2 hour and the problem did not occur during that time.

#9 is probably still gonna cause problems with the baddies that are still around somewhere.

At this point, I suggest you download the latest version of Hijackthis (see quicklinks in my signature), run it to create a scan log, and post that in a new thread in the spyware removal section. Put in a link to this thread as details on the original issues (just open this thread, highlight and copy the URL, and paste it in the new thread).

If you haven't done so already you might also want to re-enable the third party browser extensions. Otherwise, you won't be able to use things like the Google toolbar or other brower helper objects. If you get the error again then you'll know you still have a baddy in there. If no error you can leave it enabled.
