Lately I have been experiencing a problem on my Laptop when I try to open Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer. First, an illegal Operation error occurs, displaying the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module MFC42.DLL at 017f:6c3cbf55.

Once I acknowledge this message, a second error appears that displays the following message:

There was an internal error and one of the windows you were using will be closed.

Some of the symptoms are the following:

 If I click outside the second error message, I can still use both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer, but cannot close any windows until I acknowledge the second message. In the mean time I can use the windows normally, minimizing them and moving them, but Cannot close them. My computer routinely locks up when there’s a few windows on the screen at once, and I have to perform a cold boot by turning it off. (Task Manager does nothing to help).
 If I acknowledge the second message by clicking "OK" it closes the window associated with it.
 The more windows I have up at the same time, the more Second messages I get.
 I’ve replaced the following files that I determined were possibly corrupted MFC42.DLL / MSVCRT.DLL and MSVCP60.DLL. Replacing these files did nothing.
 I have also run various Virus programs, but have found nothing.
     I’m running Windows 98 second Edition, on a Compaq Armada E500.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as my Network Administrator would like to re-format my computer to rectify this problem.

    Corrupted Operating System.

Who thought they were corrupt ? If it was SFC that thing LIES big time. If some of the files that thing has told me were corrupt actually were I would not have been running Windows AT ALL.

I think your best bet is to re-install Windows FROM DOS so that it puts a full set of compatable files back in.

The two files shown in the error messages are probably not the real problem. Something else is incompatable with them.

Explorer is an Internal OS file.

    Iexplore is Internet Explorer.

Those two quite often get confused.

I would try an over top re-install first. It is not working correctly right now so you have nothing to lose. No need to lose everything if it can be prevented.
