I'm running Windows 2000 Professional. Just the past couple of days when I log onto Microsoft Internet Explorer I keep getting Error Reports saying that MIE has encountered a problem and needs to close. Then I have a choice of reporting it or not. I've reported it many times and sometimes not. Either way, it shuts MIE down, then it comes back on and sometimes it just freezes there.

I was told to clean up cookies and temp files, which I did and still no help. Then I was told to delete MIE via Add/Remove Programs but I don't find MIE listed there so how can I delete it?

I'm tempted to just download it again but afraid without deleting the program it will add more problems.

    Any help?

    Thanks.

Rose--That error report window tells you that IE has a problem (and gives you the option to report it to MS), but you have to click the "Click Here" or "Details" button to see what the actual error is. Do that next time, copy and paste the error message here.

    Microsoft Internet Explorer

    To Jim:

Here's the error signature if that is what you want to know:
    AppName: iexplore.exe
    AppVer 6.0/2800.1106
    ModName Apitrap.dll
    ModVer 1.0.0.1
    Offset 00003623

The ModName isn't always the same. It has been: ws2_.dll and ntdll.dll

Rose--Well, the solution is probably going to be different for each different error message. Did you install a new software/hardware program just before the problem started? What about a Norton (Symantec) program?
Specific to apitrap.dll, do you use Norton's CleanSweep? Many people have problems with it. (apitrap.dll is not a Windows file.)
Here is one article, which may be applicable to Win2000 although NT4.0 is mentioned
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=224813
    But here are other articles
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=apitrap.dll&btnG=Google+Search
ntdll.dll also has some problems with Norton
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/3.17.2003.html
Try these specific ideas, but if they do not help, I suspect it might be a good idea to uninstall your Norton programs--especially if you just installed them before the problem, and then reinstall only the antivirus portion.
Concerning ws2_.dll, this file has to do with Winsock (don't ask unless you know). Let's leave this problem until you work on some of the others first. Maybe it will go away.
P.S. Have you run a virus scan (with up to date virus definitions) ?
P.P.S. You might consider posting this problem in the Win2000 forum, since it is a unique operating system and someone there may have had these problems.

    Windows Explorer

    Jim,

This happened after I tried installing CleanSweep, the version wasn't compatible with Windows 2000. It didn't tell me this until after it installed. The sites you gave me helped me delete this program from my computer. Thank you.

I found on the Symantec site a new apitrap.dll to copy over the old one which is supposed to help with this problem. Now my problem, (and a real dumb question to ask you) is I have to start up my computer in DOS in order to do this and I can't seem to find how to do this. I could do this in Win. 98 but I don't know how to do it in 2000. I tried using the F8 and there wasn't a DOS option there. Can you give me an answer to this? Thanks

Rose--Glad to hear there is some progress!
I really cannot tell you how to start in DOS in Win2000, since I do not run that OS. A simple way in Win98 is to click Start|ShutDown and check the box "restart in DOS mode "|click OK.
The procedure could also be specific to your brand PC (like holding down Control or F1). Do you have an instruction book?
Otherwise, please post in Win2000 forum. I am sure you will get an answer in no time.
