internet connection trouble

IBM thinkpad 760XL and the problem is that it will sometimes fail to connect to
internet and redial etc have checked all the settings and even tested with another ISP and also changed the modem and still getting problems
Has anyone else had simular problem?
not sure what to check next as settings and hardware are all ok

Two other things to check:

If you have multiple #'s to dial out on - have you tried to use other numbers in that list? When re-dialing, is it redialing the same # or going to the next number on the list?

And you just may have a less than good physical connection - wirring. I once had this problem and noticed that the voice quality was "noisy ". Called the Phone Co. and mentioned that and had a bad outside wire fixed. Don't mention in your call the word "computer" - only that you have bad "voice" quality.
