I'm struggling with a PC running XPH which hangs up the dial-up connection for no apparant reason. I looked at it a few weeks ago when IE found find the first page then would go no further. I replaced the modem, ran system file check, re-installed over the existing insallation cleared some minor hijack events scanned for and removed all viruses and spyware. Checked DNS fine could ping the net and URLs no problem on the first attempt but then nothing. Eventually I installed Firefox and this worked fine.

Aha, I thought, the problem is with IE6. Removed and reinstalled but to no avail. Eventually I decided to just leave Firefox which worked just fine.

Guess what? Now the same thing happens with Firefox. Dial-up works of, gets IP address and can ping URLs and IP addresses. First (and occasionally second pages) appear OK but then blank page appears (as if it's timed out) I can no longer ping anything and the modem hangs up. I can redial but still can' ping or bring up anything until I restart.

Don't mind admitting I'm tearing my hair out. Th only thing I can think of now is to reinstall from scratch, that is unless anyone can sort me out??????

Do you have anything else connected to the phone line? Some telephone handsets will draw power occasionally to maintain their memory and you will lose the internet connection.

    Hi,
Out of curiosity, go to Outlook Express, clcik on tools then options, then connections and make sure the little white box next too "hang up after sending and recieving" is unchecked...
