Can anyone tell me if a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical can do everything that a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer can do despite the fact that Intellimouse Optical has no ball on the bottom? Thank you.

Yes, and it does it many times better.

I've had one for a year now, and wouldn't go back to "one with a ball ".....

To Admin.: Thank you for your message. Can the wheel on Microsoft Intellimouse Optical scroll vertically and horizontally? If so, would it be easy to change directions? Can this mouse be configured to make a single click have the effect of a double click? If so, can I configure any button on the mouse to do this? Thank you.

The wheel scrolls only in one direction, and the other things you asked are all part of the software used...

All buttons can be configured with too many choices to list....
