    Thanks Pete for the references.

No, it does not show "recommended ".

    Johanna,

The qfecheck.exe is in \WINDOWS\System32 and wouldn't show as a seperate entry. Other system utilities like tasklist don't either, part of Windows.

    Regards - Charles

    Apologies to Abraxas!

Very good sleuthing, PeteC!! Did a search on my comp (last reinstall of XP Pro was Oct 2003) and found qfecheck.exe in Windows\System 32 last modified 2/28/2002.
I checked my MS update log, no similar dates. I checked my Downloaded Programs file, no qfecheck in there- so, I had it already- but from WHERE??? I am positive I did not download qfecheck from MS because I even checked my backups from June 04, and it is not there. (I save all downloads to the hard drive and install from there) So I still have no definitive answers to this MS mystery-YET.

From my notes, dated 6/16/04 (your second link) credited to Abraxas:
and, while doing all this research, I came accross an MS download I did not recognize. I clicked it and right away a prompt came up "You must have SP1 installed to use this!" I still don't know what that one is, yet, or why SP1 would NOT be detected as installed? So, now I am going to run qfecheck, and see if I can get to the bottom of this. (Well, it sure beats cutting the grass! )

You are right, PeteC- the kids are making me lose my mind...Do you want them for awhile? How about permanently? If I box the kids up and ship them to you in England, just get a good supply of peanut butter, and you'll be fine! LOL :D

Note that the SFC issue (replacing updated files with older versions) should not be happening to an up-to-date PC. Thru 2K SP2 it did but was fixed with 2K SP3 and later versions (including XP and 2003) so that an updated system file is seen as a valid file by SFC unless it is damaged. In that case, you could have one replaced by an older version though since the replacement might need to come from the CD.

Confirming Newt's post - I had (false) cause to run sfc on my XP Pro m/c, fully patched, yesterday. Used a slipstreamed XP/SP1 CD. According to Event Viewer SFC started and completed, but no files were changed.
