Running 98SE on PIII 600 Gigabyte MB 256RAM. All updates installed.

First noticed a problem when I had issues with my Olympus digital camera running Camedia software. Tried reinstalling software and everything peachy until I get to the end of install wizard where it asks you to restart the computer. When you do this it just hangs for hours. You can control-alt-delete out of this ( Shut down box says program not responding ). Of course, when you do, the computer doesn't recognise the program as being installed. Thought this was a Camedia specific problem until I recently tried to update my video driver ( for an old TNT 64 card ). Same problem; install wizard gets to the restart screen and then hangs after clicking restart. I've left it for an hour and it stays hung.

Any ideas? I'm also getting a vi_grm.exe error upon restart ( can't find file ) which is why I was trying to reinstall the video driver. It was about 2 months between the Camedia problem and the current one.

    Thanks
    Brad

When the install gets done and it asks to reboot are you given the option to reboot later? If so, what happens if you choose later? Does it finish then? Can you restart the computer in the normal fashion then? I used to have a computer that would do the same thing but if I chose to reboot later and then shut things down manually everything worked fine. I eventually fixed it with a bios update.

There is an update to the "Windows installer ". Search MS downloads for
    InstMSiA.exe
If you have trouble finding it let me know (took me a while to find it). I could even email it to you. My note says that it covers Win 95-ME.

    Thanks for the response guys.

I tried both the download from Microsoft and the manual shutdown.
Both did not solve the problem!

One more piece of info that may or may not be relevant.

When the syatem gets hung up and I C-A-D to get out, I get the following error mesage:

    Error while launching setup
    Remote call procedure failed

    Any clue what this means?

    Thanks
    Brad

I would be inclined to uninstall both the Camedia and graphics software and do so in Safe Mode.
Go back to normal mode Windows, install the drivers for the graphics card, but avoid installing the "graphics control panel" (vr_grm.exe) or disable it from running at startup using msconfig, then try installing the Camedia program again.

The Remote Procedure Call is something trying to contact it's base website, from the sound of it, it may be the Camedia software trying to register your product. See if you can just install the basic Camedia software by using a "custom" install and unchecking any "extras" or by telling it to "register later ".
