XP Speech Recongnition requires additional software. MS Office is only 1 part. XP Plus! pack includes this as well as some 3rd party software.

Thanks very much for the information. I wish Microsoft instructions would make that clear and not give instructions that suggest otherwise. How are you supposed to use a microphone with your computer without this engine?

    Thanks

you can use the microphone for simple sound recording (or some netmeeting, a program which lets you talk to others who have net meeting installed. Some third party software also uses the microphone for various tasks.

Access to the sound recorder is through
    Start>Accessories> Entertainment.

Thanks for the info. but I tried that and it did not respond when I plugged in my mic. Maybe XP doesn't recognise my audio device CM18738/C3DX PCI? I tried downloading what I think is the latest driver for the CM18738 chip but nothing happened.

    Thanks again for your input.

you might want to check out Device Manager to see if your Microphone is working properlly...

to tell you the truth, old mike's used to have the volume on "off" and then you could talk. I haven't actually played with new microphones, but I would expect this technology to be fixed :)

You can get the speech recognition for XP here . There is a special SAPI download for XP as well as the text to speech and the speech recognition engine.

Thank you so much for taking the time to find me this information. I downloaded SAPI file and speech recognition. I went through the wizard but regretfully without success. I will try again tomorrow. After I restart my computer will I see a tab under "Speech" in the Control Panel area for devices or do I have to find these exe files manually? Sorry if this is a dumb question but this is all new to me.

Thanks again for your assistance it is greatly appreciated.

That's "onboard" sound right? (meaning on the motherboard).

You should have a CD-ROM with your motherboard drivers, and the sound driver should be there too...

Try to install those, or check the Web site of your MB manufacturer.

    For microphone problems, try this:

First, make absolutely sure the microphone is plugged into the right port on the sound card.

Then double click on the volume icon in the system tray (looks like a tiny speaker) to open Play Control. If a column for the microphone isn't there, click on Options at the upper left and click on "Advanced Controls "...the microphone controls should appear. Make sure the "mute" box isn't checked. If it it, click on it to uncheck it.

    Hi Miz,

Thanks for your suggestion. I did what you suggested but when I go to options, I found that the "advanced controls" is not available. Do you know of any reason why?

    Thanks

Some sound cards have no advanced controls. Under Options (after double-clicking the volume icon in the tray), click Recording. If the mike has a Mute box, uncheck it. If it has a Select box, check it. Turn the volume for the mike all the way up to start out.
