Was running XP on my PC but had a few problems developed including problems with pagefile and indeterminate 'disk error'; so decided to clear my HDD and reformat using a Win 98 boot disk.
Ran Fdisk without probs but when I try to format I get the message " Trying to recover allocation unit xxxxxx" and the system hangs there.
Any suggestions or is the HDD dead?

There should be a diagnostic tool available for download at the manufacturers website. Downoad an run it. If you have more than a single partition [C:] beware of any "destructive" tests.
