A friend copied a number of MP3 files from an XP machine to a new PC with Vista installed and found that the system did not recognize them when she tried to play them.

Someone told her that these files had to be 'imported' by Vista for them to be usable, and this worked, but instead of the files having the original names, they were renamed Track 1, Track 2, etc., meaning she now has to go through each and rename them, which is a real PITA.

Does anyone know if this is how Vista is supposed to work, or whether she did something wrong.

    Many Thanks.

She just made a folder and copied the files into it.

Something that is really strange though is that the same files on a CD play without any problem.

No, I'd like to know, how the files were moved from XP to Vista.
Copied to CD as data in XP, and read from the same CD on Vista?

Well, Track1, Track2, etc., are normally seen when CD is burned as music, not data CD.
What does XP's Windows Explorer say about files on that CD? mp3s, or tracks?

    Thank you for the reply.

I have been unable to contact her but I think she imported them as music and this is what caused the problem.

If I am wrong I will follow-up this posting with any further info.

    Thank you again.
