I get this message in the left lower corner saying "Error on page ". No explanation. It causes browser freezeups, failures to print, or bypassing of my ink saving program Preton.com, or a combination of the above. The error condition is intermittent and has been seen only on IE8.

Most likely an error in the coding of the page which is not truely compatible with IE 8.

If you switch to Compatability View does the error still how?

"Error on Page" is that the full message or is it actually "Done, but with errors on page "
If so then have a look at this article which will explain why you receive it.

It is extremely unlikely that a Javascript error on a web page is causing freezups or problems with you printer.

I suspect you have a malware/virus infection but start by having a look in your event viewer and see if you can trace an error report around the time you last had a screen freeze and see what it says.

Maybe it is due to a few repair runs that I made since (like sfc /scannow), the Error on Page has disappeared. There is another problem with IE8, but I will submit this under a different thread. Meanwhile, thank you for your help.
