I hope this is in the correct Forum

    PROBLEM
My daughter (she is away at University) gets this error message in her "˜Internet Explorer’ window when starting Internet Explorer (and thereby connecting to the Internet):-

    res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dns error.htm#http://news.bbc.co.uk

    ANALYSYS
    1. She has Broadband access and was using it quite successfully yesterday until she started getting the error message today.
    2. She is running "˜Internet Explorer’ v6, "˜Windows XP Home’ on a Dell PC.
    3. The http://news.bbc.co.uk at the end is what she uses as her "˜Home’ page (it’s the BBC news site).
    4. She can type any URL into the "˜Address’ space and press "˜send’ but the above error message keeps being displayed
    5. She is able to access the "˜Tools’ drop down of "˜Internet Explorer’ and has selected "˜Internet Options’ and has a) "˜Deleted Cookies’, b) "˜Deleted Files’, c) "˜Cleared History’
    6. A friend of hers with a Lap-Top has unplugged her connection from the back of her PC and has used this connection line to access the internet successfully on his Lap-Top. This leads me to think that the problem is with her PC settings.
    7. She has Norton Internet Security which, as far as I can determine, is up-to-date (she is sensible).
    8. She is able to close down her PC gracefully and re-start it without any problem. It’s just the internet access she has problems with.

I am stumped! (and she is nearly in tears)

    SOLUTION

    Has anyone any ideas please?

    Many thanks
    Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.

First thing I'd suggest she try (quick, pretty painless, harmless, often helps) is to repair or replace any damaged system files. It's really the only way IE on an XP system can do a repair. She will need her XP install CD though.

Click on start, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and click OK. The process usually runs pretty quickly and won't tell her much about what it is doing.

If that fails to help, get her to load a copy of the latest version of hijackthis (link to download it in quicklinks in my signature) to a new folder she creates directly under her C:\ drive so c:\hjt or c:\antispyware or something. It comes zipped and must be unzipped to that folder before running it. The file is small enough to fit on a floppy if she has a floppy drive or an easy burn to a CD if not. Someone will need to get it for her. Note that the floppy/CD is just to transfer the file to her hard drive though.

Once it is loaded, run Hijackthis, click the button to scan and create a log, then we will need to see the log file. Small text file so someone can mail it to you for posting here. If you post the log, we'll move this thread to the securityh section since it will almost certainly be a spyware/malware issue of some sort and AV programs aren't good at seeing them, much less fixing them.

Thank you very much for your reply Newt, I visited her at her University and did the following:-

    1. I ran the sfc /scannow, it ran OK with no error messages
    2. I can open a Dos window and I can 'Ping' an address but I still get the original error message when I try to run 'Internet Explorer'
    3. I ran the Hijackthis with the following log:-

    Problem Solved

    PROBLEM SOLVED!

I visited her at Uni and this is what I did.

    1. Using the "˜Tools’ drop down of "˜Internet Explorer’ I selected "˜Internet Options’ and a) "˜Deleted Cookies’, b) "˜Deleted Files’, c) "˜Cleared History’

    2. I downloaded a new version of shdoclc.dll from www.dll-files.com and installed it on her computer

    3. I ran the sfc /scannow, it ran OK with no error messages

    4. Phoned her ISP Broadband helpline and checked that the settings on her computer were correct (they were).

    5. In the Control Panel checked the 'Network Settings' (they were correct).

    6. Re-set her Norton Personal Firewall.

    7. re-booted her PC (at various times)

Then suddenly 'Internet Explorer' was working.

    Then I:-
    a) Installed and ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware. There were over 300 (yes over 300!) critical messages about files which were all deleted.
    b) Checked that the Anti Virus was up to date

I'm not too sure which action was the main fix.

Posted in case any one else gets the same problem.

    Many thanks Newt

    Best Wishes

    Mike

Glad it's working Mike. FWIW, it's better but it ain't fixed. There are some critters in that log that I don't think any of the anti-spyware apps can remove once they have installed themselves.

I'm moving this to the spyware removal section. I strongly suggtest you have her run another HJT scan and post the log. We should be able to give some clear directions for what to do next.

    2nd HijackThis run

    Thanks once again Newt.
I ran HijackThis for a second time after I'd run Lavasoft Ad-Aware and this is the log.
I would be grateful for any comments.
    Many thanks
    Mike
