If you did not disable System Restore, reboot, and then enable System Restore and reboot again [this cleans out restore points], after getting rid of the virus, chances are you restored the virus.
You didn't post if you had ME or XP, so try the appropiate winsock fix for your current problem.

Mark, we cleaned up the system here, so yes, system restore was cleared. :D http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=31443&page=1&pp=15

    jimbo0706,
Looking back on the thread, clearing TIF's and cookies resolved the problem before. If you clear cookies, does it work well for a while, then slowly start acting up again, til you clear TIFs and cookies again? May be a corrupted browser, which means reinstalling it.

Next time you get the error, try
start~run~ipconfig /flushdns (note the space after ipconfig)
and see if that 'fixes' things for a while.

Post back because even if it does, you have only removed a symptom and still have a problem.

Let me explain what is happening and the options you have at this point.

We meat people like words. Electronic people (computers) like numbers. When we put a URL in the browser or click a URL link, the PC has to look at the words and figure out what numeric address matches them then go to the numeric address.

The usual way this is done for internet sites is via a DNS server - a server on the internet that has large lists of name<-->address matches that your PC can check to find what it needs.

However, the checking with a DNS server slows browsing down slightly so Microsoft set XP up with "DNS Caching" so after you go to a site, the PC stores the name<-->address match locally where it can be found quicker. But if there are problems with the cached information, your PC will simply say it can't find the site rather than checking any further.

ipconfig /flushdns forces emptying of the cached information so your PC will again check the internet for the match. It's a harmless process and quick enough that I just do it but you can also make a couple of modifications to your system if you want.

By default, your PC will cache not only good matches but also bad ones. You can modify settings to
    - turn off the caching completely. This will slow down browsing a little but not much.
    - set things so that only good matches are placed in cache. This is probably the best option and IMO should have been the default setting.

There is a good how-to article Here and note that if you are not comfortable making registry changes, you can purchase a tweaking tool that will do this and lots of other good things. I don't mind registry hacks myself but I still use and like the Tweaking Toolbox.

I think this may be a spyware problem on your PC again. You will be repeating some of the things you did Here.

Hijackthis has a new version 1.98 so you need to get that and delete the older one.

Ad-aware is probably the same engine version (6.181) but double check and if not, update the file itself. Otherwise just update the ref file.

Spybot is at version 1.3 so check it as well. If you still have verion 1.2 you will need to get the newer one but with Spybot, better to uninstall the old one first. Seems to work better that way.

So run ad-aware, run spybot, run hijackthis and post your log.
