I posted to this list about a month ago with this problem, but no one seemed to have an answer for it. I'm running IE6 on XP SP2, and it (internet explorer) keeps crashing, enough so that it is unusable. I've tried several approaches, but they haven't worked or haven't been possible to complete.

    The error details are:
    AppName: iexplore.exe
    AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: kernel32.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001eb33

I have run HJT, and the log was clean. I also run adaware and spybot regularly.

    In addition I've tried:

    1. Using the "workaround" provided by Microsoft. As usual, it did not work.
    2. Running sfc /scannow. It did not find any incorrect/corrupted/non-original system files.
    3. Downloading updates for Internet Explorer. I was able to install updates, but the problem was not fixed.
    4. Replacing kernel32.dll.
    5. Reinstalling IE6. Although I have changed the registry entry for IE6 ({89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}) IsInstalled value from 1 to 0, and changed the same value for the Browser Customizations key ({60B49E34-C7CC-11D0-00A0C90347FF}MICROS), ie6setup.exe still refuses to run, saying that a later version of IE6 is already installed.

I really don't want to reinstall xp, but I fear that's the direction I'm headed. I've been using Mozilla Firefox, but it's a memory hog and seems to have a lot of graphics bugs. Also, websites that have any affiliation with Microsoft won't let you use browsers other than IE to do a variety of things.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if this method of reinstalling IE was posted in your last thread on this ....

I have used this method in the past without any message suggesting that a newer version is installed.
Have you considered a Repair of XP ?

    Still no luck

Thanks for the advice, Pete. Unfortunately, reinstalling IE6 using ie.inf did not change things. IE6 continued to crash, and I then installed the SP2 update for it, but still no luck. Also, I forgot to mention that I attempted to do a system restore to a point before the problem started, but the restore failed.

I'm going to try a repair of XP next.
