This is happening on a friend's (standalone/Win98SE/IE6/56K) machine and has me baffled. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Attempting to access the pull down list in IE's address bar causes IE to freeze for approximately half a minute during which time there is constant activity over the dial-up connection.

    So far I have:-

    - applied all MS Updates
    - Spybotted the foistware
    - DOS-scanned with two AV's
    - scanned with an AT
    - disabled BHO's
    - DELTREE'd temp and history files
    - cleared TypedURLs
    - run the Repair Tool
    - reverted to 5.5 and reinstalled 6
    - IEradicated 6 and reinstalled
    - unloaded all (but the bare essential) startup items
    - swapped the modem

And still it does it

This is the second time that the machine has developed this peculiar trait. Formatting put things right on the first occasion but now the issue has reared its ugly head again. What I did discover last time was that deleting the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} value in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace key (which is responsible for the OS searching remote machines for Scheduled Tasks) for some reason stopped the freezing/connection activit. But only until the machine was rebooted

    Ideas?

    Hey Brett

How about changing the home page to blank. When you open IE does it still try to dial in? Does the Address bar still have history there? Can you select from the list without freezing?

Failing that, when you have the freeze and the flurry is going on the dialup connection, does it actually go some where and will it let you then select from the history?

Is this only from the address bar? Can you select from favorites?

Sorry I have no answers, only questions...:)

Daizy - it freezes. Temporarily. Or would you prefer to call that a hang :D ? Anyway, it becomes unresponsive for half a minute or thereabouts whilst the dial-up activity is occurring. Oh ... specs ... PIII 500, 256MB RAM ... happy? Good!

Bill - IE performs in a perfectly normal manner until the address bar's pull-down menu is selected at which point things temporarily lock-up and the dial-up activity takes place. The list of previosuly visited addresses doesn't appear until the activity ceases at which point the addresses become selectable in the normal manner. The freeze/hang happens irrespective of whether there are any items actually in the list. Favourites are unaffected.

So far, I have only looked briefly at the dial-up activity. It would appear that IE is randomly calling one or more of the listed addresses as soon as the pull-down menu is selected. This makes it all the more strange that the freeze/hang should happen when the list is empty  I'm going to look at this a little more closely and see whether anything can be gleaned.

    Freaking women! :D

Congratulations on your problem solving skills Brett! I'm sure it's just coincidence that most women don't trust a thing you say! :D
