I was reading this post and tried to follow the link provided by Zander, when IE suddenly closed. No error or anything! Just gone. I have all the lastest updates, using IE6, 128 bit. Windows XP home. Dialup. Any idea?

I wish it were as simple as a worm. I have done all security updates and scan regularly with updated AVG and run online scanners (including dedicated trojan scans) regularly. I also keep Spybot and Adaware up to date and run them regularly. Also run several reg cleaners regularly. And I keep temp files and cookies cleared. System seems to be healthy and performs well. IE6 closes on that link and according to my wife, some Pogo game rooms. MSN explorer however does not close on any of them. Obviously, the simple solution is to just use MSN, but I prefer IE. And then there's the fact that I just can't stand it when something's wrong and I can't fix it  !

    Hi Noahdfear,
I had a similar problem with IE closings. My problem was apparently caused by Spyware.
See my post "Microsoft IE 6 Problem" dated 9/19/03.

I went to the link you mentioned from Zander and it works fine for me. The I noticed that you have XP home, and this quote from this page may explain your problem.
Microsoft decided not to include Java by default in XP
    Do you have Java enabled?
You say you have done the updates, including installing XP SP1 I take it, Java Virtual Machine is installed by it.
This should narrow your quest for the problem by looking at your installation of the JVM.

I do not think this is a Java problem - if a link needed Java a message to that effect should pop up if it is not loaded - IE would not shut down under these circumstances - IMO

FWI - SP 1 for XP has MSVM (Java), SP1a does not - MS pulled it as a result of the court case with Sun.

    An update to my situation!

Paid a visit to Microsoft Knowledge Base in search of an answer to this problem. Following their instructions, did a repair to IE 6. I then uninstalled all SP1 updates and all Java components, then redownloaded/reinstalled. IE no longer closes on the link or on pogo, but instead I get 'page cannot be displayed' when trying to load the link or a game room. Tried everything suggested at the Java site for problems with pogo to no avail and ended up at pogo support where it was suggested to disable any popup blockers. I don't have any installed! Downloaded BHODemon and disabled the only 2 found. Researched the thread by jslow, went to the links provided by brett and tried nearly everything there, including updating VBScript. No change, except that now my Opera browser won't load a pogo game room either! Says it's loading........but never does. I have noticed that I get almost no popups and advertisements don't load on web pages. Could I possibly have a blocker I don't know about? Opera is set to allow popups, and since the original post I switched from dialup to comcast cable.

Any help would be appreciated, as my wife now uses my laptop to play pogo!!ARGH!

Open your Hosts file and, should you see an entry for Pogo, delete it (the entry; not the file!).

Ok! Finally found the HOSTS file with listings but no 'pogo' in the list. Could it be listed as something else? Maybe just some of the ad banners or something?

While we're here, what exactly does this host file do? Help block out some sites while allowing others? Or is it just a list of visited or popped up addresses?

    Delete whatever's in there.

    Gorilla explains it rather well!

brett, Great link! And you hit it right on! I left the file open yesterday morning after posting and told my wife to look through it, see if she recognized any ads from pogo and to delete them, then went back to work. When I got home, I read your post and went to Gorilla. After studying there I reopened the HOSTS file and it was empty. Asked her if she deleted anything and she said no, she just closed it, and it asked if she wanted to save changes. She clicked yes. I then tried going to pogo and everything loaded up right away. It seems I may have already had the 'blocking' HOSTS file installed, and she unknowingly deleted what was in it. Who knows, I may have clicked on a link to block popups a long time ago that installed it and just don't remember. There is also a 'sample' hosts file in the system just like the one Gorilla said to remove, and it's in a different location than it should have been. Don't know for sure what all was in that file she cleared but I do know some of those entries I definitely want blocked. Looks like I may have to redo the whole thing. Anyway, problem solved! And good knowledge gained! Thank You All!! :D
