My computer seems to have developed a problem.... Although no programs are running, the IDE led stays on all the time and when there is activity, it blinks brighter. Then it returns to the dimmer stage and stays on constantly. I've tried removing each program and/ or all the programs running in the background to see if this makes a change. It does not. Can anyone tell me what is going on or what is about to happen??? This worries me. Thanks

    Hi B

Something that may help trace the problem.
Does the light come on and stay on from the moment you press the power on button?
    or
Does it stay on when it is loading or finished loading Windows?

Happened to me before. It could be one of these things:

IDE Cable Plugged into another device without the device having Power.

IDE Cable Plugges into another device the wrong way around.

Sounds stupid but i did it before

    :D

    reply .......

Thanks.... The light (led) (ide) comes on when windows finishes loading, not when power is first turned on. I've made no wiring or other changes since about two months ago and was to replace the power supply. Since then all has been OK until a week ago. The IDE light stays dimly lit with a little blink every once in a while.
Man this is weird.... Could this possibly be a voltage change from the MoBo to the LED??? An increase in that could begin to break down the resistance in the LED. That's a guess on my behalf.

My guess is that that's not a good guess, but I guess its better than no guess. Something is trying to access something in that thig-a-ma-jig.

If you have Easy Cleaner, clean your registry with it. If you have Norton SystemWorks, run WinDoctor. You can also clean out your temp files and check for spyware with Spybot S&D and Adaware.

mflynn has posted a command line cleanup routine that can use along with links to EasyCleaner, Spybot S&D and Adaware 6.0. Search his posts and your machine will thank you for it - so won't that pesky little LED.

    ;)
