    Hi marty!

My first installation was WinME and I copied the directory containing the installation files from the CD to the hard disk and installed from there. That was no problem since the file system was FAT32 and booted from a Win9X floppy, the task was a "no brainer ".

I had the same thoughts when migrating to WinXP but I wanted to go NTFS. I found no way to copy the files to an NTFS partition other than installing the hard disk as slave in another computer which was already running WinXP or Win2K. I asked a few (some would say "a lot ") of question on this BBS and the general consensus was "don't bother ".

Which file system are you planning to use and if NTFS, how are you going to copy the i386 folder from the CD?

Anyway, the i386 folder will be transfered to the hard disk during installation booted from the CD. The path is C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386

    i386

    hi christer.
    thanks for posting.my problem was
i wanted to install the recovery console.
but when i typed the required path
it said the sys on my cd was older than the one on my sys
and couldnt install it unless i had the i386 folder on my sys

i have a link here explainig the whole procedure
except it didnt explain how to extract the i386 folder from my
    cd to my hdd.
well i found a way to do it
    first the link
then i will post the path i had to use

    link i386 folder

i use xppro on a ntfs sys
xppro dosent work very well on fat.

now the path i used if it is of any help
it was some time before i worked it out as im not that
    adept with cmd

insert the xp cd into the cdrom
    open- run -type cmd
    at the prompt.
    type ; d: press enter
at the promt d: type i386 press enter
    at the i386 prompt
type this line. xcopy d:\i386\* c:i386/e

press enter, for it to extract ,it will ask you file or folder
you choose folder and it will start extracting
about 17.000 files so it will take some time.
but it was an experienced for me
as im not that good with compts
i need to do this in order to install the recovery console
by the way this path will only operate in xp32bit
    and not xp64bit
    hope ive explained this properly
    thanks for your interest
    marty

hey marty - if u want the entire \i386 folder, just copy from the CD either thru windows interface if it's already installed or via the CMD xcopy u have already.

then get tweakui and see it's 'special folder' section. there u can change the 'installation path' to the i386 on the disk.

this should then negate the need for the CD should the system need anything from it since it'll find it in on the HD

Marty, A small tip: don't press the [Enter] key when you see that your typing gets to the border of the window on the right. Just continue typing.
