I have no sound.

I've went through all the windows troubleshooting and even reinstalled my sound card drivers but it can't find a pathway. it doesn't even show any devices installed, let alone, being able to choose a preferred one. I had to wipe my hard drive clean recently and reload everything, at first it wouldn't reconize my modem and cd drive. I got help from a tech friend at work and he talked me through things to get them working but now I don't have any sound. help!
