If I have had a similar problem I reset the printer/system.

First place to try would probably be at the HP website. Look up your model and go to the troubleshooting information.

I might think it was a spooler problem. You could check information at the MS knowledgebase:
    http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1

By "clients" I take it you mean network connections. If the network does not have a dedicated server, that may be a reason. Win 98 would not be ideal as a printer server. Look at the information for "Directjet" at the HP website, you may need a dedicated printer server.

Look at if it happens with both small printing jobs and large ones and maybe if there is busy network traffic.

You may still need to investigate the software program you are printing from and the printer drivers and maybe if the printer does not have enough memory.

If you are running large print jobs, go to File -> Print..., print sections at a time (say 5 - 10 pages).

    Matt
