HP Laser Printer deteriorating

This is a model LaserJet 6p. It is used daily, and has served us well. It has started exhibiting a shadowy vertical streak in the printout sheet. There appears to be more than one, and the predominant one is a little less than a 1/4" wide, but there are other fainter thinner ones to the right.
Is this something that can be fixed by cleaning something, or is it something that requires a replacement of some part?

Black vertical lines, smears or streaks

If black vertical streaks or smears appear on the page, follow these troubleshooting steps:

The photosensitive drum has probably been scratched. Install a new print cartridge (if using a mono printer); install a new imaging drum (if using a color printer).

The printer may be dirty. Refer to the printer User Guide for cleaning instructions.

Vertical fade

If vertical white streaks or a faded area appears on the page, follow these troubleshooting steps:

The toner supply is low. It may be possible to temporarily extend the print cartridge life by redistributing the toner in the print cartridge. Gently shake the print cartridge from side to side to redistribute the toner. If this does not help, replace the print cartridge.

The print density adjustment is too light; make it darker.

EconoMode may be enabled; turn it off.

The internal mirror may need to be cleaned on certain printers; refer to the printer Users Guide for cleaning instructions.

The paper may not meet HP’s paper specifications (for example, too moist or too rough). Try another brand of paper. Refer to HP LaserJet Printers - Print Media Guide for more information on HP LaserJet paper specifications.
