    Hi All,

I have recently noticed that my laptop no longer goes into Standby Mode. I have checked the Power Options and Standby is available and I have it selected when I close the lid on my laptop. When I do close the lid, instead of it going into Standby Mode it hibernates. I have tested standby by un-checking hibernation mode in the power options and it works fine without any problems. Upon rechecking hibernation mode standby no longer functions. It is as if hibernation overrides standby mode.

    Thanks

    Russell

It looks like Hibernation is causing the problem. Instead of closing the labtop lid have you tried just clicking Start< Turn Off Computer< Stand By? Does that method work or do you get the same result?

    Hi Evan

I have followed your instructions >Start >Shut Down >Standby the system then starts to hibernate and the status bar appears before the laptop turns off. I thought you could have both Standby and Hibernate functioning, for example Standby after 25 mins and then Hibernation after 40 mins. Does this not work even when you have these options selected in Power Options?

You should be able to use stand by even when hibernate is enabled. I have never heard of an issue like yours before. Is your battery fully charged? Do you have your labtop plugged in when you trying to use standby with hibernation enabled? Maybe your labtop is going into hibernation to conserve the battery power. Are you running a screensaver? If you are then try turning it off and using standby with hibernation enabled again.

I have never come across this issue before either. I've only experienced it on the laptop. The laptop is fully charged and connected to the mains. I have tried to see if standby works both on the battery and on the mains. The only screensaver which comes on after 5 mins is the default XP Pro screensaver. I have disabled this for the time being. I've noticed that if you disable hibernation, standby functions. Upon enabling hibernation and again selecting standby, hibernation kicks in and takes control. Its as if hibernation takes over standby and prevents it from running.

Ya that is very odd Russell. I really don't know what else you should try to resolve this problem. Do you have any software installed from your system manufacturer that has power options or anyhting like that? Software like that could be causing this problem since most labtops from manufacturers come preinstalled with the companies utilities and software. Have you tried shutting down all backround programs before trying standby with hibernation enabled? Maybe a piece of software is conflicting with standby. Look through Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and remove any software that you don't need. Those are really the only suggestions that I can think of for the time being.
