This is a friend's mother's machine: was on broadband connection without firewall and their Norton AV had not even been activated; I activated it and scanned /w NAV, ran Spybot and Adaware, and then ran this HJT. Please advise as to what needs to be deleted. Thank you.

Download RegSeeker and extract to it's own folder.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall New.net if there. If not there or unsuccessful, use procedure #4 from here to remove it.

If AOL is no longer used, and won't be, I recommend you uninstall it.

Go to start>run and type services.msc. Locate Wintools in the list, right click and select properties. Stop the service and set to disabled, click apply and OK out. If not present, just proceed.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries, if present. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and click OK. Click yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files and extensions for known file types.

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folders Media Access, NEWDOTNET, MyWebSearch and Toolbar if present.
Open C:\Program Files\Common files and delete the folder WinTools.
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content.

Open RegSeeker. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Delete all.

Open Ad-aware and run in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup.
Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log. Report any problems.

Okay, I ran HijackThis and 'fixed' the listed items, then turned off system restore and enabled /safeboot. Hit 'restart' and now the machine cycles endlessly without booting, no matter if I select Safe Mode, Start Normally, or Last Known Good Configuration. I see the winXP splash screen, the progress bar moves for a few seconds and then the machine reboots itself.
    Any ideas?

    Update:
I made a boot disk from another XP machine, and can boot again, but not in Safe Mode, so I have not been able to delete the Media Access, NEWDOTNET, MyWebSearch and Toolbar folders. Going to try and repair the boot record or whatever it's called so it will boot without the floppy being in the drive, and see if I can get it to start in Safe Mode...unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Sure don't have any idea what might have caused that. Checking the safeboot option normally boots straight to safemode, no choice offered at all. Glad you have gotten it booted again.....whew! Would you post the contents of the boot.ini file please? Right click My Computer and select properties. Click Advanced tab, then Settings button in Startup and Recovery. Click edit, then copy/paste it here.

The /safeboot option adds /safeboot to the boot.ini file. That is a perfectly normal boot.ini file, not what I would expect to see after checking the /safeboot option. Have you tried booting without the floppy since it was successful? You can also get to safe mode by tapping F8 when you first start the computer. That's when you should get the options list for Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, LKG, etc .

If it still does the same thing, boot back up with the floppy and go back into startup and recovery, then uncheck automatically restart. This should give you a stop error message rather than restarting when booting without the floppy. Write down the exact error, boot with the floppy and post the error please.

Sorry, I had deselected the /safeboot option and tried F8 before I cut'n'pasted the boot.ini

Even with the change, it does not boot into safe mode, with or without the floppy. Also, once I boot from the floppy and open a Command prompt, and type:
    xcopy a:*.* c:\ /h
it will only boot once from the mbr, and then it won't reboot unless I use the floppy. Something is taking control of the computer, and preventing /safeboot from doing its job.

    Okay,
unchecked automatically restart, and rebooted without floppy and this is what I got:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Was WinTools present in services? Were you able to uninstall NewDotNet? Do as much as you're able to from the list while in Windows. Then post a new HJT log and let us know what you were unable to get rid of.

Check the event viewer for any clues to the stop error.

Try running this tool from Symantec to remove it.

That tool did not seem to help; I have not been able to get into Safe Mode at all, and have to boot using the floppy.
I tried a Linux bootable CD, and mounted the NTFS volume, but couold not delete rogue files, as it mounts read-only, and I'd need to re-compile the kernel to get read/write ability for ntfs; a bit beyond my abilities.
So, now I am going to try to mount this drive as a secondary drive in another machine, boot from the primary and delete files to cripple the WTools etcetera, - hopefully enough that I can then get into Safe Mode and clean up the rest...

So far all I see is I can not delete references to WinTools in the Registry, with or without using Regseeker. Regseeker finds several instances of WinTools, I select them, right click and ask it to delete them, but when I re-run the app, they are still there.
Errors say either: "Unable to delete all specific values" or "Can not delete <xxx> : Error while deleting key "

Sounds like the writers of that nasty have been updating it, and have added some permission settings to the keys, making them/it harder to remove. Double click the entry in RegSeeker to open the registry editor, then double click the entry again and it will open that key in the registry editor. If there is a subkey, try right click and deleting it and if successful, try the WinTool key. If still unable, you will probably need to take ownership and grant full access to the key and their subkeys (inherit) for the logged user.
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/regedit_take_own.mspx
If you need help with it, let us know the exact registry paths to the keys, as well as the name of the key (you could export them in RegSeeker and post.....right click and edit, then copy/paste) and I can write a batch that will show us the current permissions.

A second thought that may be easier. If you can get into safe mode now, logon to the Admin account and try deleting the keys. Sorry that thought didn't hit me earlier.

Too late :) I think you can close this thread - a job well done - Thanks!!
I already searched on 'WTools' and 'WinTools', changed the perms and deleted; now regseeker brings up no results.
Thank you for all your time, and the education.
I'm going to go drop off this computer to my friend's mom, and set up her new hardware firewall/router and explain her spy/ad/ware, and antivirus programs.
    Thanks again,

Fantastic! :) I didn't see Spybot's SDHelper in the last log. Some malware deletes the SDHelper.dll. You can get it here if it's missing. Extract it to the folder where Spybot's executable resides. Then open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click tools in the left pane, then Resident. Check the box for SDHelper. Also recommend you click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it (always recheck this setting after downloading updates). Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly and watch for any protection being disabled.
Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.
