I would try the IE Repair Tool. It may tell you to reinstall his version of IE [5.5 SP2?].
Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, double click MS Internet Explorer entry, then select Repair Internet Explorer and click OK. Reboot when prompted.

Got a couple of questions. When you go to add/remove...do you have anything such as "savenow" or "Newdotnet" listed?
And lastly...are you able to go on the net with this machine? I wonder if it's your winsock?

Fancy seeing you again Markp62 :D

    Hi Daizy

    I can't answer your questions. Like I said it's a friends puter.

I will copy and give him all the replies.

What should he do if these show up on add/remove?

I know he said something about this directing him to a proxy server. but then he can't go anywhere on line.

    Thanks

    Hi Geri,

You mentioned above about a proxy redirection,
is your friends computer on a network with a proxy server?

If not or if they dont know what a proxy server is tell him to check the dial up settings look for and remove the check from a box that says "connect through a proxy server "

this error message can also occur if:
a/ your isp's DNS server is down (highly unlikely)
b/ your network admin has not granted you internet access privilages
c/ as pointed out above by Daizy the winsock
d/ your TCP/IP settings are incorrect

there are more, MANY more but these are probably the most common.

And dont ignore the possibility of a virus either!

    Cheers
    TBP

    Hi Geri
If they do find those two entries in Add/ Remove... uninstall them. I'm leaning more and more, towards this being a broken winsock. The link I provided is the fixtool for that.
