    Hi Tim!

How old are you and how long have you had that computer?

What is the make and model of your computer?

How did you connect to the Internet before this problem?

I think you must be sitting there waiting for a response since I see that you're still active online. You have to press the "Refresh" button up there on your browser taskbar in order to see the latest posts in your thread. Otherwise, you won't see any responses and the people posting back to you will wonder why you don't respond.

    OK, no problem.

Since you reinstalled the OS, you'll need to get the drivers for that board. You were using the onboard nic for connection apparently. Visit the Asus site and input your board model and you can get the necessary drivers there.

Yes, that would be the drill. The site would be here.

If you think that system stinks, I agree.

It would be nice if the drivers were on a CD that came with the computer. Alas, it is not usually so.

No, and that may be desirable but it isn't necessary. Windows will boot just fine without them so you can do the refining after the install.

This is true, but I rather have them in the slipstream that way the driver's get installed :)

It is being done but I doubt it's worth the time and effort. I'd just as soon supply the latest drivers after the install since rewriting the install disk every time the drivers get updated would be a bit of a bother.

Of course, old drivers would work and relieve you of some of the problems of a re-install.

Well, it's all part of the learning curve I suppose. You must recognize when you have been stiffed and take the appropriate action to minimize the damage.

First, seek out the drivers you may need and download them. Then place them on separate media so you'll have them when needed.

Secondly, remember who did this to you and try to avoid doing business with them next time you buy a new unit. Make them aware of how you feel. It just might change their business plan.

I just read back on your original posts and it reminds me of what I am dealing with here. We had an electrical storm one day and it took out my NIC and one of the router ports. I had to buy a plug in NIC card to get back in operation. Fortunately I had a spare port on the router so that wasn't a problem. So now I have a computer with a deactivated dead integrated NIC and a router with a dead #1 port.

I doubt if any of that applies to you but I just thought I'd throw it in for fodder.

You might want to consider getting a NIC if your board supports it since they cost next to nothing. Then you can forget about the MOBO drivers for network connection since XP will have drivers for most NICS or a default one that will work.

There's something to be said for plug in cards. Makes for easy troubleshooting.

How to get onto the internet

You may need a driver disk to install the device drivers for your motherboard .
That is to get your onboard network card up and running.
Windows XP to its credit has the largest catalogue of device drivers to install things - but only if they were made before Windows XP was written ( i.e if the support to install those devices was built into Windows XP).
The easiest workaround is to stick in a network card into a PCI slot.
Windows XP installs most network cards.
Now you should be able to get onto the internet.
Go to the manufacturer of the motherboard or computer ( say it is an HP) and download the drivers.
If you can look at the model of the motherboard.
If not use the belarc program

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

You can check in the device manager to see if things are installed. If they are not you will see a question mark or exclamation mark.
You might want to update some stuff that may otherwise not get updated at www.oldversion.com
You may well want to do a Service Pack 2 update for some devices to work ( US2 for example).
Save a copy of your drivers for future use next time.
To make your life easier there is an excellent service for drivers that scans your hard drive and points you to download sites.

    www.drivershq.com

    Hope this helps
Most likely you are missing the device drivers for the motherboard.
Put any network card in a PCI slot and you should be able to get online
