i have a WD200BB-60cvbo . i hook it up and on boot up the computer Recognizes the HD and CD rom, and i have WIN xp in the CD to boot up WIN xp install fresh. when it loads up it shows The HD as a 20gb HD wich is correct but it says Bellow that it is unable to use this drive. when i stick the HD in a combuter a secondary Bios Recognizes on boot up and shows both HD's but when i get to windows and goto my computer it does not show the WD drive anywere. i can feel it spinning and it does not make any sounds what so ever. im so confused.

Would download and try wdc's Data Lifeguard Tools 11.2 for DOS. Or run fdisk (on a win98 boot floppy) to look at the drive further, and maybe remove the partition and ,after a reboot, make a new partition, reboot again and format it. If these steps are impossible, or after doing this windows still can't use it, it's probably bad.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

The partition/s on the drive may not be a type that Win XP can use. When you run the Windows installation, look for the section to remove/delete the partition. Remove it and remake it.

Get the Data Lifeguard 11.2 Tools here:
    http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=1
Have you set the jumpers correctly? The tools have information about the jumpers.

The fact that it spins, but you cannot hear the read/write heads working may mean that the heads are broken. The tools should tell you.

You could use the tools to remake the partitions and format the drive. If all else fails, you can use the tools to "zero (low-level) format" the drive. That will remake the MBR which holds the information about the drive.

    Matt
Edit: Hi sparrow, you posted while I was typing :)
