I just had another hard drive put into my computer because my C-drive is full. How can I transfer files from Drive C into the new Drive safely. My operating systems is Windows 98. I thought that files would automatically go right into the new drive but nothing does so it is very hard to install new programs, even though I would specify to put into the new Drive. Everything loads into the C drive and then stops because it is to full. I have even deleted programs that I do not use.

To avoid operating system problems, it would be best to start out by moving things that do not interact with the OS, like documents.
What besides programs do you think take up your space? Do you have a lot of saved, downloaded programs, for example? Have you saved music or videos of any kind? And what about that "My Documents" folder? If that is very large, you might try doing as I did and creating a folder on that spare HD called "My Documents 2" and moving most of the contents of that folder to the second drive. You can create a shortcut to it on your desktop so you can access it easily.

Note: If you have a "My Music" folder in your documents, your players will not be able to find the music until you open the player and direct it there. Same for any other apps that use My Documents as a default folder. But these problems are usually easy to deal with.

You might also go into Add/Remove in the Control Panel. You might be surprized how many programs are there that you never use and will never use. Uninstall them.

Another thing that will free up space is moving your swap file to the other drive. Right-click My Computer and look for the virtual memory settings. Leave it as system-managed, but specify the location as drive E: (or whatever you new drive is called). After rebooting, search for the swap file on your original drive and delete it if it wasn't deleted automatically.
