On the QuickBoot. It should be off for now. Later if you want you can turn it back on.

When Quickboot is off the computer counts/tests memory at least twice amongt other things! It gives the HD more time to init before Windows boots.

Now you are on track. After the stinger and PQremove and SFC /scannow, we will be able to install and run Easy cleaner and a full Norton Virus Scan etc. Including the Adaware that has not ran yet.

The opening of the Email message attachment is a setting in Outlook. I know about that! We will get that later.

5 unsuccessful boots. reset quicboot & trying another boot. 10 attempts still fail with the white screen & the blue progress marker fully filled.

Soooooooo frustrating. Any mircles up U're sleeve?

by Blue progress marker do you mean the squares that go accross the botom of screen. If so this is the OS and not likely hardware at this point.

    Up my sleeve!

Get it up somehow finish the Stin/PQ and SFC and very, very good chance things will be different.

Especially after we are stable enough to finish the cleanups.

Also the next time the progress bar is on screen tap the F8 key and try safe mode again. We may have cleaned enough that it will work now!

If you downloaded the stinger/PQ it would be even better in safe mode.

I you get to safe mode run them then the regcleaners again form here. They are even more effective in safe mode.

Mike Yup the blue progress bar is the blue squares on the W2K screen, so ti's the OPSYS that is failing.

I'll try safe mode during the boot & pray.

SSAFE mode gets to MUP.exe & quits
SAFE with networking quit at config.sys

Another thought...I have 2 Win2Pro CD's but don't hink either are bootable. I have 4 Win2K diskettes & a bootable WinME CD and the 'Ultimate boot diskette for Win/me "

would any of these be of any help?
Or should I try to 'find' a bootable Win2KPRo CD.

    No!

Not yet not in this case.

The factory 2K cd is bootable. But to fix the system files with SFC it should be put into the CD after system is up not booted from.

OK! This is only more proof (safe mode mup) that the system files are curupt. By the way it is not the actual MUP that is the problem here. MUP actually completed it is the next thing that tries to load taht fails.

OK! So lets drop back and punt.

Next time you can get it up go ahead and do the sfc

    this way

    1. 2K cd in drive
    2. start run sfc /scannow
    2. reboot

    Mike

PS am going to get dry cleaning will be back in 20 minutes

Mike I'd love to ry that but I've been trying to reboot to the desktop since my first post this morning..........all to no avail. It will boot to the W2kPro screen & build the blue squares, someitmes all the way across & someitmes not. The final tasks are checking the keyboard then the IOMEGa on the parallel port wiht the printer & then a STOP.

I got it to boot ot the desktop cleanly 1st thing this am & read my mail. Since then NOTHING. I tried to think what I had donw that I could undo. Have reset BIOS back to disbale quickboot, but as it's not HW........ Have kept the BIOS set to alarm if thres's a try to write to the boot record. Other thatn that I just ran the trojan tool from the web & halted on 2 scanns of the disk on the 2nd web scanner tool.

I deleted Zonealarm AGAIN using regclean.....tha's the ONLY thing I think that I did to actually change the REG.

Another prob is that I don't have a factory CD I have a downloaded one, but it was what I used to install W2KPro, so I don't know if that will matter, but CAN "T get it to boot to the desktop.

    Miracle required

If you used it to install then it should work!

Disconnect all external devices printers Iomega scanners and even the Broadband to complete this.

With monitor, mouse & keyboard it still won't go past the full blue progressbar.

Not that this should make a difference, as it DID boot this morning. The case has a CD & a CDRW, both powered only the CD with a ribbon cable.?????

Remove any disks that are in either.

Try the F8 again and see if you have aselection for VGA Mode try this!

With the devices disconnected try safe mode again!

There are NO cd's in either either drive. The case contains (as it did on boot this morning thousands of hours ago) hardfile, diskette, CD, CDRW, IOmega drive. As thismorning only diskette, CD and HD were cabled to the MOBO.

NEW information. I substituted another older HD which has W2KPro installed & Roxio goback. for my drive. No other HW changes.

Boot went thru BIOS post...scanning IDE...looked at both CD's for boot records, then it showed the Roxio gobakc screen & then went to the black screen with the progress indicator in whitealong bottom. It failed B4 showing any white block.

Then I rebooted I hit the space bar on the Roxio screen to try & exercise one of those options & the system froze.

Anthing HW wise you can discern form this. @differnt HD's both freeze duting boot up on the same MOBO.?????

We thought the new - replacement HD was not booting Bcause it was not pinned as master. Pinned it as master & still boot froze. So we have determined that it's the MOBO HW. Let me know if U have other thoughts, & what they might B. Have to go for a bit.

    Thanks again for U're help.

The other problem I need to work on is a machine wher the HF wouldn't boot (blue screen after the UPS beeped & I quiesced the machine by doing a shutdown. The went abk to sleep & it would not boot clean in the Am.

I may pick up on the this post with that problem. This one is my work machine the other that we've been workign this morning is my backup machine.

    Will post later.

Somehow I do not believe this is the mother board. I base this on the fact that recently after finally booting up you were able to function.

Ok here is the next step. I was dreading writing all the steps and going from memory so I found the steps you need right here on the BBS.

Read the 4th message down /Laage

This is the steps to get 2K to update the system files without wiping out your other settings and software.

To do this go into BIOS and set the CD to the 1st bootable device. Let it reboot from the CD. Or use the disks to get access to the CD and install process same as the first time you installed 2K.

From my own memory /Laage is right own and he is very good!

I REMIND AS HE DOES DO NOT CHOSE THE FIRST OPTION TO REPAIR BUT CHOSE INSTALL, THEN WHEN THE INSTALLER FINDS AN EXISTING INSTALLATION ONLY THEN CHOSE REPAIR.

    (Thanks /Laage)

    http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7540&highlight=repair+install

Sky if this don't work it may be time to clear it all, reformat and start over.

    My fingers are crossed!!!!

    Keep us posted.

The same proceedure applies to XP so here is more info! Go to the bottom of this page "How to Repair install" give grapics of what you will see. Disreguard the references to registration that is XP only.

Mike now to the office machine. It boots past the W2K pro white screen & immediately gives a blue creen BSOD with Inaccesible-Boot-device.

The pins on the Master HD are not bent, the master HD is plugged to the end of the ribbon cable with a CDROM dirve plugged to the miidel of the cable that's seated in IDE1 on the MOBO.

The incident that caused this was the UPS beeping in the night. I assumed it was going ot have a power failure so I did a shutdown & now I get this error.

If you don't feel up tot his problem, then tell me to start a new post.

Please understand that any frustration you hear is with the situation, not oyur very generous help.

No such thing as pins bent "if" it was working before. Should not be hardware unless things have been removed and changed since the failure.

You need to try safe mode on this one and do the Disk Cleanup we used early in the other thread.

    Also detach any external devices.

Have appointment at barbershop will be gone for 1 hour.
