I have a 13 GB hard disk and now when i am trying to restart the pc, the hd led remains red, and it is failing to boot up (i just hearing spinning continuosly). Does this mean that the hdd is gone. Moreover, when i am entering the BIOS the primary master is not being recognised [None].

Is there any possiblity that i can recover any data from this drive ?

Also, could it be that it might be a cable problem or you consider it is definetely a faulty hdd.

However, i am going to buy a new drive ... any recommendations such as brand etc ?

    Thanks

First thing to do is check out the cables - power is clearly getting through, but nothing else. Unplug and reseat the ribbon cable and if this has no effct try substituting another cable.

If no luck here your diagnosis may well be right.

Try to auto-detect your HDD in the BIOS and see if this gets you back to a readable state. Check and/or replace your CMOS battery. This might just be a $3 problem on an older machine.

thx for your replies! Unfortunately it wasn't a cable problem, but it is a hd failure.

I've replaced it and everything is working fine now!

    Thx!

From my experience the system is "crashing" during boot (and when it is accessing the drive). I don't think the drive would have "failed ". I'd try using the manufacturers test utilities on it.

Ditto on the mattman's response - its certainly worth trying to test if you can get it recognized.
