I see what's going on. Someone, something (malware?) made it hidden system file (rahs).

Go back to Tools>Folder Options>View tab, and UN-check "Hide protected operating system files" (put the checkmark back, when we're done with dealing with hosts file).
Restart Windows Explorer, and you should see "hosts" file now.

OK, still no luck. The file show now, (half shade like a hidden file icon) but clicking on administrator group and OK doesn't resolve it. Should I be checking the FULL CONTROL box at this stage?

Still no luck. When I try to run HostsXpert I still get the error notice: Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts

By the way, I have tried to download AVG free version over the last week and it has failed to completely download on my computer. I seem so have some parts of it as AVG Free 8.5 is shown on my start menu with the rest of the programs but if I try to activate AVG Free Tray Icon or Interface, nothing happens. Everytime I open Outlook Express, I get 4 error notices saying that this program cannot be scanned by AVG or this message cannot be scanned. I even went to the extent of uninstalling every other scanner I had, SpyBot, etc. just to see if they were interfering but it still won't download AVG completely. I think whatever malware I have here is interfering with the installation process.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

When I run the ComboFix program, I get an error message telling me I can't rename ComboFix as ComboFix[1] and try naming it with an alphanumeric name.

Incidentally, my computer is taking longer and longer to download the BBS pages. They take about a minute to download now and another minute to go to page 2. I'm trying to give as much incidental information as possible so that may shed some light on the problem.

Delete your Combofix file, and download one from HERE.
I renamed it it already.
See, if it'll run.

I tried that link you sent me 4 times and the page simply doesn't display anything to tell me how or where to download ComboFix. There is one larger "tab" that seems to be asking for a file to be typed in as it has DOWNLOAD on a button to the right but that area is blank and will not accept text.

I have to pull the pin for the evening and will start this process over in the morning. As the BBS pages are now taking up to 3 minutes to load and then some of them simply don't, I may be running out of opportunities to send you messages Bronti. If you are inclined to do so, you could contact me at greeno@shaw.ca if I haven't got back to you by noon tomorrow.

Thanks kindly for all the help so far. This is turning out to be a real bearcat. I tried to open Google just now from a desktop icon and it opens a proper Explorer window with took and task bars and signifies DONE on the bottom task bar but the page is just blank grey. Things seem to be falling apart rather surely!

Same problem, the error message is telling me I can't rename the file. I tried to get it from their website again and it won't run.

Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run
Type in:
combofix /u
Note the space between the "combofix" and the "/u "
Restart computer.

================================================================

See, if you can delete "hosts" file.
Most likely, it won't let you, so...
Download, and install Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
Restart computer.
It'll install under right click menu.
Try to remove "hosts" file with Unlocker.

Very well.

Open Notepad, and paste following text into it:

Save the file as hosts (no extension).
If Notepad will put .txt extension to it, rename the file from hosts.txt to hosts.
Place the file into C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder.

Post fresh HJT log.

Very good :) How is redirection issue?

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
• Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
• Accept any prompts.
• Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
• Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

================================================================

HJT log looks very clean, except for some unnecessary startup, so we'll remove them now (no actual programs will be removed).
Re-run HJT, and checkmark following entries:

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
- O4 - HKCU..Run: [Skype] "C:program FilesSkype\PhoneSkype.exe" /nosplash /minimized
- O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
- O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll

Click "Fix checked" button.

Restart computer.

When done........

Your computer is clean :)

1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

2. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore ".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C: ")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

3. Restart computer.

4. Turn System Restore on.

5. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

6. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

7. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

8. Run defrag at your convenience.

9. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

10. Please, let me know, how is your computer doing.

The redirect trouble seems to be gone for now. I proceeded with your latest instructions and didn't get past page one. While trying to download Java update for IE 7, I got the following message:

Get the latest Java Runtime Environment to use Sun Download Manager

Internet Explorer Users: Check the top of this page for a "Java(TM) Web Start ActiveX Control" message in the information bar. If it appears, click it to finish detecting your Java version.

We were unable to detect a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. With the latest JRE, you can automatically download, install, and run Sun Download Manager (SDM) directly from this page. We highly recommend SDM to easily manage your downloads (pause, resume, restart, verify, and more). Visit java.com for the latest JRE.
