All of a sudden IE6 will not display any images in the GIF format (+anims) even though all of the revelant boxes in internet Option/Advanced are ticked.

    JPEG images are okay.

I guess it must be something with MIME types (only configurable in Netscape ?) or a reg key is corrupted.

If anybody can help it will be appreciated

    Try This

    Borrowed this from elsewhere...try it
"Start Windows Explorer. Navigate to any .gif file. Single left click on it to highlight it. Now press and hold the shift key. Right click on the .gif file and select "Open With ". Scroll down and select Iexpore to open it with. Make sure to check off the box at the bottom that reads "Always use this program to open this file type" and click on Ok. That will reassociate All of the .gifs to use IE." ....Rhett

paulbristow --Tell us what program is associated with GIF Image in your File Types. Start|Settings|Folder Options|File types tab|scroll to GIF Image|highlight|click Edit|click Edit in the next window. What is listed in the "Application used to perform action" line and the "DDE Message" line?
    I have "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome
    and "file:%1 ",,-1,,,,, respectively.
Is the "Use DDE" box checked?
That sets up Internet Explorer to open GIF files for me.

    Jim

I do not have a entry for GIF, and I am unable to set one up as the extension is already in use by PaintShop Pro.

I have checked on a working machine that displays GIF's okay in IE6 and that does not have this file type.

Upon furthur investigation I CAN view GIF's when the page is server sided but when the file is local or IE6 is used as a preview engine in programs like Homesite or Dreamweaver the GIF images will not display.

This is getting weird I am sure the answer lays somewhere in a reg key?

A registry error caused the problem, all working okay now the key for .gif in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT was corrupt a quick export from a working machine to the faulty one and all worked okay

Thanks to all in helping me to resolve this issue.

    Thanks
    Paul

I do not have a clue as why I must have been fiddling about (as you do) and for some reason it decided to bite me back
