    Hi everyone,

I need to free up some space. I looked in the C:\WINDOWS folder and saw a boatload of $NtuninstallKB1234$ files. I assume these are all files that were backed up by Windows when it installed new critical updates. Should I just delete them all? They will be part of SP3 anyway I presume??? Why are these folders blue, by the way?

Also, 2 folders up in the SystemVolumeInformation is a restore folder that is 4GB big with tons of subfolders named RP156 through RP233. These subfolders are again blue. There is one more subfolder named RP234 that is black.

I'd love to know what these are for and which files and folders I can safely delete. And the color issue would be interesting to know as well.

    Thanks everyone. :)

The blue color indicates compressed files.

The $NtUninstallKB******$ folders can be deleted if you are sure that there will be no need to uninstall any of the updates. Some burn out to CD/DVD to be able to copy back.

Do not touch the $hf_mig$ folder. It contains information vital to Windows for keeping track of different file versions installed by different updates.

The SVI folder holds restore points for System Restore. In System Properties > System Restore, either move the slider to reduce the allowed space or turn SR OFF and ON to clear all restore points.

Awesome. Thank you, Christer! I was able to free up enough space to partition my hard drive and install Vista RC1. It's pretty cool, but still too unstable to effectively work with it.

Anyone know when RC2 will be coming out? Thanks again! :)

RC2 has come and gone. Microsoft allowed 200,000 copies to be downloaded then 'closed the door'.
