I have Windows 98 upgrade. What would cause my Freecell to give an error message, and then the "performed illegal operation" notice? Other games are fine.

It's been my experience when you get errors of this sort with any of the MS games it's usually something that's running in the background causing the problem. Last year I ran into this (or something similar) with freecell after I installed Intellipoint 4.0. If I killed point32.exe it would run fine. Try doing a ctrl>alt>delete and end task on the programs that are running to see if you can find one that's causing the problem. You can kill anything except explorer and systray.

    freecell problem

Thanks, Zander, for your help. I will try that, the only program that it may be is "128 bit encryption support for dial-up networking ".....it seems to be the only item added recently (where it came from I have no idea).

    freecell error

Freecell works on selective startup, not on normal startup. Is there a way to "end task" (in turn) in the CtrlAltDel window without closing down? In that window, I have Explorer, Eboard, Internat, Hbsrv, Poproxy, Remind 32, Hbinst, Navapr32, Systray and Pintray....which one of these is most likely to be the culprit?

Is there somewhere I can find out what each of these programs do? Thanks for your help.

Not sure if I really understand this. You should be able to ctrl>alt>delete, click on one of the programs and then click the end task button (don't click shut down) . Close the window and then try freecell. If you still have the error try another. Another way to do this would be to click start>run, type msconfig in the run box and click ok. Click on the startup tab and uncheck everything except explorer and systray. Reboot and try freecell. If it works, open msconfig and start rechecking them again and rebooting until you find the one thats causing the problem. It's anybody's guess as to which one it is.

I did some checking on these as to what they are. You may or may not have a virus. Internat can be legit or a virus. Look in your windows folder for internat.exe. If it has a question mark for an icon it's a legitimate file. It leaves a language selection icon in the system tray. If internat.exe has a zip file icon it'a a virus (actually a trojan) . If this is the case go
    here for more info.

Eboard - eMachines multimedia keyboard manager. Required if you use the extra keys.

Hbsrv and Hbinst - These belong to a program called Hotbar. It's considered spyware. If you don't use it, go here to find out how to get rid of it.

    Poproxy - norton's email protection

Navapr32 - also belongs to norton.

Pintray - I didn't find anything on this one. Perhaps a typo on your part?

You can find all this information at this site.
    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
Scroll to the alphanumeric index and click on the letter that the program you're looking for begins with.

    You should also download

Spybot and Adaware and run them and see what else they find.

    freecell errors

Thank you - I began with the easiest to find - the Hotbars. I got rid of all of them, and the Freecell is now working. Strange, though, that I've had the Hotbar since April and haven't had trouble until now. I'll make a note of the uk info site, it is not available at the moment.

I could not find the internat.exe in my W folder; could it be hidden? If so, how do I find it?

Yes, the "pintray" was my typo - it is "printray ".
