I am trying to format a 200Gb drive via computer management / disk management - right click and format.

It begins formatting and shows a progress indicator. For some reason though, it stops on 40% and won't go any further. I end up having to shut the computer management dialog down. Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work as it should? Can anyone suggest another method of formatting this large drive.

I am using windows 2000 with service pack 4.

Are you trying to format FAT32? If so, that won't work.

I was trying to format NTFS. I have managed to format it using the "quick format" option so I hope that is Ok.

It sounds like a disk error to me. I suggest you go to the manufacturers homepage and download the appropriate utility to test and wipe the hard disk. Personally, I never do quick formats because it skips the actual test of the hard disk and only rewrites the MasterFileTable (MFT).

Yeah...I'm a little concerned as I have had a problem with this disk one time before where it lost the MFT. Luckily all my info was backed up. Only problem was something happened to the OS so wasn't sure if it was a virus or an actual problem with the disk.

Thanks for the tip though...I will check the manufacturers website for a utility to check the drive and if need be, format it properly.
