I've read several articles that stated that after formatting a hard drive, there are still ways that someone could in fact recover information from the drive. I also remember reading something about a program out there that completely removes all traces of information from your drive so that nobody can find anything of importance on it after that program has been run.

Does anyone have info on a program like that as i'm going to sell my old computer system and want to make sure there is nothing recoverable on the hard drive.

    Thanks....

I'm currently using Eraser 5.3 which has been doing well so far. You might give it a try :)

    Hi, Kenny ~

Deleting selected files from the computer, formatting the hard and even overwriting or 'wiping' with a program drive does not prevent subsequent recovery and use of this information by unscrupulous individuals using commonly-available applications and tools of technology. Depending on the urgency and ability to spend inordinate amount of finances and time, someone willing can still find all your gay ****. ;)

I have a tool I found on a P2P file sharing network that has allowed me to recover data that has was thought to be gone after formatting and overwriting and it was pretty **** easy.

The U.S. Department of Defense has established guidelines for permanently erasing hard drive information and eliminating its recovery. DOD 5220.22 requires that all non-removable hard drives must be sanitized for reuse by overwriting all addressable locations with a character, its complement, then a random character and verification.

Commercially-available applications can delete all information from a computer hard drive and repeatedly overwrite its entire surface, thus defeating any subsequent attempts at recovering the formerly-stored information. One such application is CleanDrive from White Canyon Software, which complies with DOD security specifications. You would need to do some research on the 'net to find a strong app to destroy any sensitive information, but if you are just looking to get rid of the Aria Giovanni & Captain Stabbin' stuff, most of the common apps will do the deed. :D

A visit to the web page of your hard drive manufacturer can yield you a utility to write all zeros to the drive, giving you what you are looking for.
