When I tell Windows to shut down, 90% of the time I get a message saying that there are some programs that it has to close, do I wnat to close them. I always click on Yes or whatever, and have Windows shut them down.

This is an annoyance, and I found online a registry hack.---see the post by Anonymous in the comments section. It will get Windows to automatically do this, without waiting for your confirmation.

Is forcing WIndows to shut these progams down a good idea? I typically close out all programs in the task bar (before telling Windows to shut down), so its not like I'd lose 3 hours of work or anything like that.

What is the risk, if any, of using a registry hack like that? I also saw that some recommended a desktop shortcut/CML paramater, but I'd rather do it from the start menu/windows orb if possible.

Hi Paul. I've used that registry tweak on many Windows 7 systems to make them shut down faster and have experienced so side effects.

There really is no risk involved unless you are working on a word document or something like that and happen to shutdown your system while your word document is open. Other than that case go ahead and perform the registry tweak and see if you notice a difference in your shut down speed.

Great. Like I said I always close all the programs in the taskbar before doing my shutdown, so I'll go ahead. Looks like the risk is zero. Thanks.

I do like this reg tweak. It will in fact show the window that mentions the programs, but just as quickly now, does the work of automatically shutting them down itself, so I don't have to do a thing.

    Excellent. Thanks again.
