I can't install a parallel printer - or any other directly connected printer to my computer. The wizard always ends with an error that the port is unknown. The only Port that is available is a TCP/IP port, no other ports are listed in the drop down menu where it should list the Parallel port, USB and others.

Does anyone know how to reset the selection of ports?

FWIW, the device manager lists the port and indicates that it's all right, the new hardware wizard detects the printer and even selects the proper driver to install for it.

Try start~run~sfc /scannow and have your install CD in the drive when you run the command.
