    Hi everyone,

I noticed in a recent post someone was having trouble with a floppy drive. Windows that would tell them the floppy wasn't formatted, and ask them if they wanted to format it.

I recently lent a mate my second machine, running XP, and it's having the same problem.

I had a look at it, I made sure all cables were seated, I tried another floppy drive, I tried another cable, I tried different discs, I made sure the cables were around the right way, basically I tried everything I could think of, to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm beginning to think it may be a Windows issue.

    Cheers,

    Justin

There seems to be no definitive answer to this bar that offered by Microsoft - which looks somewhat daunting ....

Floppy Disk is Not Accessible, Not Formatted, or Not Recognized by Windows

What happens if you format a disk - does that sort Windows out?

Another possibility, if you have not already tried it - Shut down, disconnect the drive physically, reboot and uninstall the floppy controller through Device Manager - reboot. Shut down and reconnect the floppy drive and reboot.

Some time ago I had some similar problems on the odd occasion, when my floppies would not work and a full Format did not work I had to do a quick Format and after that it would allow to do a full Format. Also I used to have Floppies formatted to accept 1.78 MB instead of only 1.4 but this would only work on 98 XP refused to look at them and would not re-format them.
