I used to have my icons fixed so that they would stay exactly where i put them.
Now, all of a sudden, they seem to be attached to a grid.

I checked the "Arrange icons by" and nothing there is checked except for "show
desktop icons ". Not sure how or when this happened but would like to get them
to "float" again. Is this in the SP2 upgrade? How do i get them to float again?

    thanks,
    savagcl

One more - what would happen if i set the icon spacing (both vertical and
    horizontal) to zero?

    Floating Icons

On your desktop right click and take the check mark off align to grid.

Rattle it's cage a little. Check the "Align to Grid" and watch for effects. Then uncheck it and hope for relief.

That did align them evenly around the edges of the monitor but unchecking
it still didnt make them float so it looks like they are still aligned to a grid.

Wonder if there is a way to turn off the grid???

    thanks guy,

No way to ditch the grid that I know of except as we have already done.

Verify that "Lock The Taskbar" isn't checked.

    Run sfc /scannow

If this happened immediately following SP2 install, consider uninstalling it.
