I cannot get Macromedia Flash Player plug-in to install in IE I get all of the correct screens Active X and the install box but when completed I do not see the required animation, I have even downloaded the Flash uninstall tool and re-installed but still does not work.

Checked Privacy/Secuity/Firewall settings but all seem okay with no issues as to why it is being blocked.

I am sure I am missing something, but what! I am lost.

paulbristow--I understand you set IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level| "Run ActiveX controls and plugins" to Enable or to Prompt. Correct? You need that to even be able to download Flash.
Now when you try to run a Flash animation directly from the web, that site must also be allowed to run ActiveX. But the above setting should take care of that.
You can try to download the Flash image to your hard drive and play from there
    http://www.browsertools.net/Flash-Saving-Plugin/index.html
Are you sure the files you want to see are .swf files?

Yes to all of your questions

I can see no flash content in IE at all after installing the plugin-in from Macromedia (install was completed but the flash logo at the end of the install never played just a small red cross).

I want to play some flash movies in IE and develop some web pages to view flash content but I need to get the plug-in working (worked fine last week) but now no longer working

paulbristow--Based on what you say, perhaps a System Restore to a date prior to when the problem started? Did you install any soft/hardware just before the problem started?
By "plugin" do you mean Flash Player, itself?

System restore is not possible as I have it turned off I use Acronis to take an image of my hard drive unfortunately the last image I took had this problem because I did not realise it existed.

Flash (.swf) will play on my PC okay it is ONLY when I use the plug-in for IE (flash files) that I get the problems in that flash content (web based ) will not play just the normal small red cross.

I have installed the Macromedia Flash Player when asked to do so via an Active X control and an installation requester box which seems to work okay as no errors are shown it is just that IE REFUSES to see or play shockwave files.

So the problem is a VIEWING one as the files are there (I am convinced).

paulbristow--Try putting URL of the sites with the flash content into your Trusted Sites. Uncheck the box "Require Server Verification... ".
Still not sure what you mean by "plug in ".

I could put hundreds of sites into the Trusted Sites area but it would make no difference at all as IE WILL NOT display flash content because the plug-in which allows this is not being reconised by IE to explain what a plug-in is go to this address:
    http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

This is the Macromedia flash plug-in page you should see a moving logo if installed okay if not, you can install from there.

This is my problem, I cannot see shockwave (.swf) files inside of IE.

I have found some more information as follows:

I managed to get the install file from Macromedia (Flash Player8) and when installing I get the following error box up.

System32\macromedia\flash\flash8.ocx failed to register. HRESULT-2147220473. Contact your support personnel.

So it seems that it will not register the .ocx file, anybody know if I can do this my self?

I am getting desperate now as I have some (paid) projects to complete for web based flash videos and I must have spent 12 hours trying to sort this out I am not sure what else I can do, the main area I think that is happening is that for some reason my "Allow ActiveX controls" are not working in IE but I have re-installed it and allowed the Internet settings to download and view ActiveX controls........

paulbristow--Yes, you may have to put each site that has a flash animation into Trusted Sites. (I have to.)
Have you tried just one to see if it helps your problem? (Including the macromedia.com download site.)
Now, however, you have added something new
Have you run a search for flash8.ocx to see if you have it on your hard drive?
Perhaps some help here. Note the suggestion about using regsvr32.
    http://www.northcode.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=6024
    Several more references here
    http://www.google.com/search?source...romedia\flash\flash8.ocx+failed+to+register."
BTW-- Have you told us what version of Windows and IE you are using?
P.S. There is a site that tests which, if any, version of Flash you have installed
    http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/
And, yes, you do have to put macromedia.com into Trusted Sites to use it.

Thanks for the reply there was a some good stuff for me to look at unfortunately none of it worked for me, I tried the "Dependency Walker V21_x86" (http://www.dependencywalker.com/) which did show up some missing dll namely MSJAVA.DLL and EFSSADU.DLL these I replaced but on the next run it showed that MPR.DLL had an error and came up with the following message:

“Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module."

At this stage I could go no further as I do not have a clue on the repair as this dll is in place and the correct version.

Tried regsvr32 to register the file but again this came up with an error :

Dll ReigisterServer in Flash8.ocx failed return code was: 0x0070005

and again this does not mean a thing to me so I thought I would unregister the file and it allowed me to do it, how the hell can you unregister a file that was never registered in the first place!

It seems that for what ever reason I do not have the correct permissions to register ActiveX controls so I have checked my permissions in the registry against the CSID {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} and they were fine (right mouse button/permissions)

Recently I created a new profile and deleted the old one (as auto complete would not work) I was wondering if my new profile is somehow corrupt in that the permissions have got messed up.

I am using XP Home with SP2 and all current updates are installed.
Also I have put Macromedia.com in the trusted sites the only path I could find was "tools/internet options/privacy/sites" I presume this is the correct one?

paulbristow--I regret that I have no other ideas than the following.
Well, this could be part of, if not the problem.
What you have done is put macromedia.com (and any other URL's you have done this to) into a list of sites that may not use cookies--unless you clicked the Allow box. I would take Macromedia.com out of there, but I do not know how critical that is.
But you certainly have not put macromedia.com into Trusted Sites.
Trusted Sites are found in IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|highlight Trusted Sites|Sites| enter the URL's of the sites you want in the Trusted Sites Zone (certainly www.macromedia.com). Uncheck the box "Require Server Notification... "|OK|Apply|OK.
Does that help? You may have to go back and download Flash Player version 8.0. And then try the Flash Test site link I gave you.

    paulbristow--
I understand the situation is as follows:
    1) You can view .swf files that are downloaded.
    2) You cannot view .swf files directly from the internet
    3) When you try to install MSAntiSpyware, you get messages that various .dll files cannot be registered.
1 suggests you have Flash Player on your PC and it is functioning.
2 suggests you need to put the individual site into Trusted Sites. Although you do keep mentioning a "plug in ". Perhaps there is a special plugin, with which I am not familiar, which assists in viewing Flash files directly from the internet? If so, can you refer me to it?
3, of course, is a different matter. Do you disable your antivirus program before you try to install MSAS? MSAS is a beta program. It is good, but help for it is limited. There is a user forum
    http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...&pt=&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us
However, there are other antispyware programs. You can use AdAware
    http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
    or SpybotS&D
    http://net-integration.net/sbsdtutorial.html
    instead.

    1. I cannot view swf files on the web or when they are downloaded as the player I use is called SwiffPlayer and this needs the activex componet to be working I also use SwishVideo2 to produce flash files (which can no longer be viewed) the program is not causing the errors but it is the end result I cannot see as the Flash8.ocx file will not register.

    2. I cannot view swf files on the internet because the Flash8.ocx file will not register.

    3. For Plugin read ActiveX control, a plugin is from the Netscape days when most add ons used a plugin a bit like Photoshop where it uses 3rd party graphic plugins to produce various results.
I do use Adaware it just that I thought I would reinstall Microsoft AntiSpyware (used to use it before) that was when I noticed that yet another program would not register its dll's

I have shut down the McAfee firewall and virus protection when installing the Flash8.ocx (C:/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash) also tried Flash5, Flash6 and Flash7.

I must have tried 20 or more fixes for this problem but none have worked I have also put some of the sites in the trusted area but this does not work bearing in mind ther are literally thousands of sites that use flash content in one way or another so the task would be unworkable and besides I have never had to do this before.

It is simply (I am convinced) a permissions problem with the registry or files which remains unfixable there was even talk on some of the sites that a Microsoft Security update 896688 could cause this I did not remove it as it showed to many dependant files/programs would cease to function if removed so I applied a registry patch as supplied by Microsoft, but this did not make the slightest difference.
