    Hi all,
I have just found out that you can cut down on memory usage by doing the following:
Firefox is a great browser, but it costs a lot in memory usage. It's not uncommon to see 50,000 KB of memory in use. While that can't be fixed completely, here's a way to cut down on memory usage when it's minimized:

    1. Open a new tab.

    2. Enter about:config into the Address Bar.

    3. Right-Click in any empty space. Create a New Boolean.

    4. Enter config.trim_on_minimize

The question is: Should the value be set True or false?

    Cheers

I'd say neither, my meagre 512Mb system can easiley handle firefox with 6+ tabs. Push comes to shove then value should be set to true but what real benefit is there?

I don't know of any solution, but you have to patient with Firefox3.5.x. I have 512Mb RAM, and I open Firefox with one tab (It happens to be bbcamerica, or which I am a big fan).
It goes all the way to 110000 Kb, before the page shows anything, after about two minutes. In order to have some actions new site need to be opened by selecting File|New Tab. A number of Tabs do not matter in memory usage, but 3.5 is, pathetically, slow, for me.

Are you saying the number of tabs does not impact total memory usage? I may have 12-20 tabs open at any given time - memory usage is ~220 Mb. If the boolean addition will reduce memory usage I'd like to know. Since I have not used the about:config I assume it can be deleted if it doesn't seem effective?

You can delete it if you want. But I have noticed that it does make a difference. You can also try this.
Here is a good trick to Increase speed of your Internet

    1) open any of your browse

    2) in URL write about:config

    3) there will appear a filter box just down from your toolbar

    4) there write http

    5) now from the list find network.http.piplining set it to true

    6) then find network.http.maxrequest set it to 10

Restart your browser and check I am sure you will find some difference

I never meant that. Compare the fact that I use one Tab to start, and your unbelievable 12-20. There is a Tools|Options|Tab setting to warn you if open Tab will slow down your browser. If you want to keep an unlimited number of Tabs, then follow directions of ganjaman.

Network tweaks won't affect FF memory usage at all.
I will speed up FF though. (page loading, download rates, etc)

In truth, FF doesn't use any more memory that Internet Explorer. You don't see the IE memory usage in Windows because more than 2/3 of IE's components are already in memory when Windows starts up.

As the admin here likes to say, "Memory is for use! "
