I used to have Windows 2000 and I was having troubles with my Bus Master IDE Controller so I used the automatic windows update to get a new driver and everything worked. Now I am on Windows XP Pro and it doesn't have that option and I don't know who the correct creator is so I can't get the right updated driver so it's causing problems. When I install programs from a cd the computer crashes and when I try to install anything from the harddrive it gets CRC errors. The windows default driver was VIA Bus Master IDE Controller so I tried getting an update and did but it still fails so my guess is that it should be different.

I'd suggest that you right-click the driver while connected to the internet (and allow access through your firewall for "rundll32" or "Run a dll as an app ") and with your XP CD in the bay, and let it update automatically. XP rarely picks the wrong driver.

And then, look elsewhere for the source of your problems. It would be a good idea to run a complete surface scan on that drive.
